Scouting the 2018 Draft: Ryan Weathers; Mason Denaburg; Will Banfield

Ryan Weathers is a husky 6'2", 210 lb HS LHP, the son of former MLB pitcher David Weathers.  He has an easy 3/4 delivery of a mid-90's FB with 2 good secondary pitches.  Committed to Vanderbilt.  Reminds me of Brett Anderson. Keeping his weight under control will be in issue.

Mason Denaburg is a 2-way HS RHP/C who profiles more as a pitcher going forward.  Sturdy 6'4", 195 lb frame with long arms and legs and oodles of room to fill out.  He has a simple, easy 3/4 delivery that produces a heavy, tailing FB up to 97 MPH.   He also has a sharp, hard curveball and a changeup that is advanced for a HS pitcher.  He's more athletic looking than you would expect for a catcher.  With a 6.84 60 time, he could probably play OF too.  He is committed to Florida and could probably enhance his chances of continuing a 2-way career if he goes to college.  Love his ceiling as a pitcher, though.

Will Banfield is a HS C/RHP who profiles as a future catcher.  Scouts currently rave about is catching defense and rate is as superior in all aspects, framing, blocking, throwing, footwork.  At the plate, he has light-tower power and an improving hit tool.  Strong physical presence from the RH batter's box at the plate.  Committed to Vanderbilt.  The history of HS catchers in he draft is dismal but Banfield may be the exception.  A team that thinks it can sign him away from Vandy and develop his bat, may just pop him mid-first round.

  1. Prediction: the Giants will trade Beede or Suarez for an OFer and draft the pitcher who they think can get to the majors the surest and the quickest tilting toward the latter.
I would think Miami would be interested in home-boy Andrew. How much else? Giants traded their former #1 for 6 years of control of a current 3+ WAR GG 3B. How much would they/could they go for 5 years of a much younger (also 1 GG) CFer? Not suggesting Giants do this, but would Miami take Ramos, Suarez, and a couple lottery picks for Yelich? Or one of the pitchers plus some lower guys for McCutchen?

    1. I don't see a scenario in which Christian Yelich is traded to the Giants. There are other teams who could use him who can offer more attractive prospect packages and Miami can afford to wait for a huge offer.

  2. The Giants are going to draft a pitcher with the first pick. I hope they take the best one available and not the one they think will get to the MLB faster. Everything they do in the draft this year and next should be with their sights set on 2020.

In the meantime I think there are still plenty of really good options to help us compete this year. Bobby Evans doesn't get a lot of credit for what he has done since taking over at GM and I think he has a few more tricks up his sleeves. I'm still amazed he got other teams to take Span and Moore off our hands and we end up getting some prospects and a GG All-star 3rd baseman for the middle of our lineup and 15 million in salary relief!! He will find a few outfielders either through trade of FA's and he is setting things up nicely for the future.

His first year he got us Cueto and Shark who are the backbone of our rotation. He also got us Span who had his moments but ultimately helped get us Longo. His second year he got Melancon which made tons of sense before he got injured. He could have done a little more but last year was a complete dumpster fire and I put that on Boche and the players and even Sabean for not drafting anything the last couple of years before Bobby took over.

    1. I don't think it is set in stone the Giants take a pitcher at #2. Agree that Evans is taking a lot of unfair heat. Same people who are ragging on him now as were wanting Sabes fired in 2009.

    2. "... sights set on 2020 ..."
Since the draft is in June 2018, the first year of pro ball is 2019, ah, 2020 would be ambitious for a 6/18 draftee!
Bumgarner, drafted in 2007, made a cameo in 2009 and was effective in 2010.
If the Giants drafted Bumgarner thinking he would be quick to the majors -- which he was -- they obviously did the right thing!

    3. It's a little optimistic if they pick someone like Rocker or Hankins to expect them to make an impact in 2020 but that is when Ramos and hopefully several others will. The other thing to consider is that if they draft a stud pitcher with the first pick, it makes it easier for them to trade MadBum if they start this season slow.

Any prospects they get for MadBum would likely be impacting this team in 2020. Drafting a pitcher this year makes too much sense for them not to. Giants scouts are good at evaluating pitchers and they are going to need a replacement for MadBum if they decide to trade him or if they don't feel like paying him 300 million after 2019.
