DrB's 2018 Giants Top 50 Prospects

I thought the Giants might resolve their offseason needs by the end of this week and we could post a top 50 prospects list that had a reasonable chance of remaining intact until at least midseason.  With reports of no imminent trades and Kuip reportedly saying the process could drag on until March 1, we'll have to go ahead and post the final prospect list and start posting our profiles or we won't be done before the minor league season starts.  If there is a major subtraction of prospects in a trade, we'll just have to revise the list.  Oh well!  With that introduction, here's the list:

Once again, try to not get too hung up on the exact order here.  The main point of this exercise is to become more familiar with the prospects in the Giants organization.

  1. Duggar at three; that's bolder than I thought you might go! I thought he'd come in around five or six with some combination of Slater, Reynolds & Shaw (due to power/closeness/call-up success/production) over him. Is that the realities of he may be called up this year or are you that bullish on his abilities after his Arizona Fall League play and him being named one of the Top-10 prospects by the coaches and managers there?

Also, FWIW, do you realize that Duggar, Ramos and Reynolds are all considered to be average or better prospects for CF? At least according to what the scouts say the Giants say... Which makes it a bit hearsay.

Other than thanks for all the hard work, I'll be looking forward to your more in-depth prospect-by-prospect write-ups.

    1. Re. Duggar, I would say it's the reports of his plus D in CF that do it for me. Slater could maybe play CF in a pinch, but nobody is going to rate him plus out there. Reynolds is farther away and opinions are divided over whether he's a CF or not. Love Shaw's power and the Giants are obviously impressed by it too, but even the Giants admit he still needs a lot of work before he can play LF in the majors.

    2. How risky is it for a player's development if he's promoted to the major leagues for defense before he's ready to hit at that level?
Crawford fit that category, didn't he, if .250 with some pop is learning to hit? It seemed he had put it together in 2016, perhaps the emotional issue dragged him back last year, and he'll hit again in the .270's which would be a plus. Perhaps .250's is OK with his glove.
This wasn't meant to be about Crawford but about Steve Duggar -- could he come up with his plus D in CF? At 24 yo, he'll be challenged much as 24-yo Crawford was at the bat, but Brandon was extra plus as SS.
      Not apples-to-apples.

Although Slater hit ~ok (he was the only under 26 yo Giant who did), Arroyo and Jones didn't.
Hope Longoria works out better than Moore did!

    3. Sabes and Evans have said Duggar could be the guy in CF if they get strong upgrades for 3B and a corner OF. We're already halfway there.

      Delete
    4. So Bruce then for strong upgrade to corner OF? Will SF then have any CBT room to pick up a LHP reliever like Duensing or Watson?

    5. I think they said that when they were still hoping to land Stanton, and before they got some breathing room under the CBT threshold, but yeah, that's the idea. Maybe if JDM's priced comes down into their range?

    6. I read somewhere that Shaw's run tool was rated at 20. Don't know if that's accurate, but point was he is excruciatingly slow. In the sense that you can't teach speed, I'm wondering if he'll find a place on the field.

Giants didn't get creative enough with Duvall. They knew he had the bat.

    7. Fangraphs gives him 40/30 for speed, which isn’t excruciatingly slow; and given that the Giants seem to be considering such inept fielders as Bruce and, even worse, Martinez, Shaw may not be at so insuperable a disadvantage. I keep praying they won’t end up with the klutzes they’re rumored to be hankering for, but since the Mike Morse experiments, I have less faith than I once would have had, that the bullet, or rather the short-range cannonball can be successfully dodged.

    8. @mm: We have three in-house options.

      1. Will Smith will be back this year. His rehab is, reportedly, going exceedingly well. I read that he should be ready for opening day, though they may be very cautious at first and put him on the 10-day DL if he has any issues. Then he'll be limited in innings until the AS break.

      2. Ty Blach may end up back in the bullpen if Stratton, Beede and/or Gregario make the 25-man roster.

      3. Andrew Suarez (the one in AAA, not the one who stunk it up with the Giants last year) who is a lefty with a solid 4-pitch repertoire who could get his MLB start in the bullpen if he doesn't show-out and make the 25-man.

  2. Is Matt Gage washed up as a prospect?
He was unprotected Rule 5 eligible but no one took a flier on him, so he's not ready in 2018.
He pitched well @ Richmond last year and occasionally @ Sacramento.

    1. I forgot about Gage. I'll look him up. Maybe HM?

    2. Gage is a contact pitcher who keeps his walks down and has a modest groundball tendency. Tough to see him succeeding at higher levels unless he finds a way to miss more bats.

  3. Thanks for the list. I am curious to see how the two Boston pitchers perform in the Giants system. Since they are new to the SF Farm system, they represent more of an unknown quantity so I will pretend they are incredible sleepers!

    1. It may say something about the relative strengths of farm systems: the two pickups from Boston are 10 & 11 on your list including one @ 17 yo!
If he makes the rotation in the next couple years, the Giants could have their own version of the ABC'S:
      Anderson, Bumgarner, Cueto, Samardzija!
      Add Stratton and it's ABC'SS
Should Bum leave Blach or Beede could fill in there.

  4. Chase Johnson started 2016 with the River Cats. Pitched 6 games coming out of the last game April 22nd with his runner on 2nd in the 8th inning. Inherited runner scored, Johnson got the loss, and didn't pitch again. On the 23rd he was placed on the 7-day disabled list. Never was reactivated.
At the end of the season he was "recalled" by the Giants.
Do you know what happened to him and what shape he'll be in for 2018 ST?
He was certainly doing OK @ Sac when he went down.

    1. I think Chase Johnson underwent TJ surgery. I assume the Giants expect him back in 2018 as he remains on the 40 man roster.

  5. Very solid list; hard to complain about anyone's placement.

I believe Sam Coonrod underwent TJ surgery and will be out the year. In light of that he might be a candidate for HM, like Johnson.

Let me also speculate about those on the list that I think are most likely to outperform their slot: Suarez, Gregorio, Howard, Rogers, Ruotolo, Bryce Johnson. We'll see!

    1. Even if they come back completely healthy from the TJ, losing that full year+ of development is brutal, especially when they were not that young for prospects to begin with.

  6. what's your take on Sandro Cabrera, decent number in augusta, turned 22 mid season and dominated lefties.

    1. A bit old for the level, but started his pro career late for an international signee. Could have a future as a lefty specialist. I'll add him to the HM list.

  7. McCutchen would be a good 1-year rental IF he doesn't cost more than the 2 we got from the Rangers for Moore plus anyone after Quinn on your list and Sam Dyson (for CB relief or Pirates take back 4.5MM of McCutchen's 2018 salary). That's a nice haul in numbers for Pittsburgh and Cutch gets a nice home for a year.
With an able CFer (Duggar!) McCutchen is savvy enough to play AT&T's RF. Might be a good mentor for Duggar, too.

    Replies
    1. The Giants have been known to go fairly high for half-year rentals, so it shouldn't be a surprise if they trade a blue-chip for McCutchen -- and he's probably worth it to play RF if they obtain a ball hawk in CF. How high a chip?
I hope they start with Helios and Duggar as not available. Pirates might have interest in Beede, Slater, or Shaw, but shouldn't SF hang on to Shaw long enough to be sure of Belt?
Slater had an impressive debut, would anyone be comfortable with that? You can't get something for nothing. McCutchen is a positive defender, RH power hitter, good vibes.

  8. The Blue Jays have acquired infielder Yangervis Solarte from the Padres, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports (Twitter link). It’s not yet clear what the Padres have gotten in return for Solarte, who comes with up to three years of team control. He’ll make a guaranteed $4MM in 2018, and then Toronto will be able to decide on club options totaling $13.5MM in 2019 and ’20.

    1. I've always really liked Solarte. On the surface, he looks like he could have been a more affordable option for 3B for the Giants than Evan Longoria, but there's a couple of catches: 1. It's very possible that neither the Giants nor Padres wanted to trade within the division. 2. While Solarte's total contract is for a lot less than Longoria's, quirks in the CBT rules enabled the Giants to get further under the threshold while a trade for Solarte would have almost certainly brought them closer to it.

  9. Sorry I'm late to this, but just wanted to say I appreciate the effort you make each year to compile and write up your Top 50 prospect list!

He's a bit forgotten now, probably because his injury appears to be a gift that keeps on giving, but any thoughts on Gustavo Cabrera?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Sadly, I think Gustavo's hand and other injury issues have gotten the best of him. He's had his moments, but has never been able to get any traction on his pro career, mostly due to the injuries. Really a shame because this kid had all of the physical tools and more.
