Game Wrap 9/30/2017: Padres 3 Giants 2

The Giants somehow managed to pull off giving Matt Cain a career sendoff to remember AND keep the Tank Brigade happy.  Now, THAT is not an easy accomplishment!  Key Lines:

Matt Cain RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.43.  Talk about waking up the echoes!  Cain looked a lot like the Horse out there even if he was running on fumes in the 5'th inning.  What a triumphant exit.  Have to say I choked up a bit as he went down the hug line in the dugout and came back out for one last curtain call.  Cainer still has most of his life ahead of him.  I am sure he will find a way to live it well as he has up to this point.

One more thing:  When you factor in his postseason record, I am not so sure he doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame, but with HOF voting more and more taking on a sabermetric bent, I am sure he won't be judged as worthy by those who regard the postseason as just another small sample size.

Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.09.  Oh my!  Just when we think the Giants have found their backup plan for Mark Melancon, he blows 2 Saves in 2 games giving up multiple runs in both games.  In fairness, the first two hits were pure bad BABIP luck with a throwing error by Brandon Crawford thrown in, but there was nothing fluky about the 2-run double by Austin Hedges into Triples Alley.

I just don't see how the Giants can commit anymore money to the closer position this offseason, so they have to hope Melancon is fully healthy, or Dyson can pull it back together or someone else steps up, Maronta, Crick, Law?

The Giants Loss coupled with the Tigers win over the Twins put the Giants in the driver's seat for the #1 overall draft pick by 1 game with 1 to play. If the Giants lose tomorrow, the pick is there's no matter what the Tigers do. Unfortunately, if the Giants win and the Tigers lose tomorrow, the Tigers hold the tiebreaker and will get the first pick. The Giants are guaranteed at least the #2 pick.

Johnny Cueto gets the final start of the season facing  Luis Perdomo.

  2. How ironic is it that the Tigers finally get their revenge on the Giants, and they do it on a Sandoval HR?
