Down on the Farm: 8/17/2017

AAA Sacramento River Cats trumped(excuse the expression) the Reno Aces 7-4:

Slade Heathcott CF- 2 for 5.  BA= .293.
Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(15).  BA= .284.
Tim Fedorowicz C- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(9).  BA= .296.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 8/2.  ERA= 3.25.

-Will Heathcott ever get a shot at CF in SF?
-Shaw is the Giants premier power-hitting prospect.  Can he play LF in the majors?  Can he hit for enough average in the majors?
-Free Fedex!

AA  Harrisburg Senators edged out the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-4:

Caleb Gindl CF- 1 for 5, HR(8).  BA= .302.
CJ Hinojosa 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .284.
Jerry Sands 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .282.
KC Hobson LF- 2 for 3, HR(8), BB.  BA= .248.
Cody Hall RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.86.
Tyler Cyr RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.28.

-What a motley crew in Richmond!

*********************************************************************************

High A  Lancaster Jethawks bombed the San Jose Giants 8-2:

Heath Quinn DH- 2 for 3, HR(9).  BA= .237.
Caleb Simpson RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.53.
Rodolfo Martinez RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Drew Muren RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

-Muren is a new name.  He seems to have come over from the D'Backs organization.  6'6" RHP.

*********************************************************************************

Low A Columbia Fireflies blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 5-0:

Kelvin Beltre 2B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(10).  BA= .251.
Dominic Mazza LHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.01.

-This is the first season Beltre has not missed most of in his career.
-I'm sure the Giants have their reasons for not promoting Mazza, but they are not apparent to me.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes buried the Boise Hawks 14-5:

Malique Ziegler CF- 1 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(23).  BA= .272.
Bryce Johnson LF- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .335.

Mikey Edie LF- 5 for 6, 2B, SB(5).  BA= .455.
Rich Hill RF- 2 for 4, 2 2B, 2 BB, SB(6).  BA= .180.
Ricardo Genoves C- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .252.
Heliot Ramos PH/DH- 1 for 2. BA= .338.
Seth Corry LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 1.69.

Camilo Doval RHP- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.52.

-Is Mikey Edie finally finding some traction?
-Read a report about a pro scout raving about Genoves when asked who is a Giants prospect in the AZL nobody is talking about.
-A Ray Black sighting!

*********************************************************************************

DSL  Giants squeaked past the Padres 2-1(7 innings):

Marco Gonzalez LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.69.

DSL  Padres outlasted the Giants 3-2(10 innings):

  1. Gustavo Cabrera has been hitting good when playing, but he barely plays? Has he gone as far as he physically can after his injury? I wonder why Logan Baldwin hasn't at least been called up to A-Ball yet? Has he really got anything else to prove at Salem-Keiser? Jason Bahr's numbers as a starter are very good. I know its only 5 starts, but they are very promising. Now you got me looking up Genoves? This prospect stuff is getting addictive. Thanks again for your blog.

  2. Report on ray black is he was really spinning a good off speed pitch.

  3. Black?
    Weak.
Part of player development is about knowing when to give up on somebody and move on.
He's just taking a younger somebody's spot at this point.
His time to shine was like 2-3 years ago. When he was healthy he got rocked.
And no, throwing 100 is not that unique anymore like it was when he was first a prospect. Every Org has more than a few of those now.
Much of this lost season is about Evans' terrible player evaluations, like in LF, which is still a hole of uncertainty for 2018. Span is not an exciting option. He's another bad contract ownership refuses to eat, so he stays for the final year.
Keeping Black around is just another example of wasting a spot on a guy who won't help, even at the lower levels of the minors.

    1. At this point, other than the total dearth-log jam at AA, no one else is blocked, and nothing is lost except a few in Sacramento waiting for September.
I'm looking forward to 15 call-ups (or more) dominating the lineup, with next year's hangers-on watching and waiting.
Pence, Span, Belt, Panik, Hundley, and maybe Craw should sit it out and be fresh next March.

    2. I remember saying that about Crick who, once, was a Top-100 prospect and the best prospect in the system before crashing.

    3. Crick was a highly rated first-rounder who showed flashes but couldn't master his delivery as a starter.
The solution: the bullpen. Took a while, but he's found a home. He's always had one of the most electric arms in the system.
Black is injury-prone and never produced like Crick.
Re the top comment above: no major league team ever calls up 15 guys in Sept. It will be more like 5 in SF, if that.
Belt is soft, which means he's probably done for 2017.
Pence will play out the string to pad his stats to make up for all of the time he lost to injury/didn't produce. Ditto Craw, and Hundley is hot right now and a valuable backup. Mgt will bless it as well to make the final chapter of a miserable season less so.
Most of these guys aint sitting.

  4. Would you believe that the Giants are 9-7 in August?
Are they playing themselves out of the best picks?
If they continue this pace they could win 71-72 games and finish ahead of not only the Phillies, White Sox, and Reds, but could catch the Padres, A's, and even the Tigers (long shot). Not quite "worst-to-first" but 7th pick in the draft. Make Sabean a little sorry for his intemperate remarks?

Do the Giants control Slade Heathcott beyond this 1 year?
    From Cot's:
Slade Heathcott cf 1 year (2017) 1 year (2017) signed by San Francisco as a free agent 2/14/17 (minor-league contract)
Does he automatically become a FA at the end of the 1-year contract? Or do the Giants have to release him?
There are several players on the 40-man roster who aren't coming back to the team this year -- or any year -- are the Giants at risk of losing Heathcott if they don't at least try him out?
Why did they sign him if they aren't going to try him? He has major league bonafides.

Parker is going to stay in LF until he hurts himself again or goes 0 for ever -- either of which is a possibility. He has been a breath of fresh air for August -- SSS: .320/.346/.520 with just 1 HR in 50 ABs.

Pence has become a bonfire just when it seemed his gas tank was empty. His slash is even better than Parker's. Chasing Span around the bases last night was great theater!

Span isn't quite DOA, but what else is there to know about him in CF? The Giants would learn if they have a forward looking player if they'd try Heathcott for a the remaining 39 games.
Free Fedex? OK, and FREE SLADE! too.

Moncrief: he's fairly quick for a big guy, has played nearly 100 games in CF at low levels in the minors, did he bomb there so he's not getting a look here? Can he be worse? And how about catching? He kinda looks like a catcher. Be fun to see guys stealing on that arm!

  5. We really need Arroyo back. Sandoval is hitting .200 since returning to the Giants, with a .220 on-base percentage and .325 slugging percentage. That's nearly 100 points below his OPS in Boston this season. The Red Sox, at some point, had seen enough. Hopefully the Giants will too. And we can beyond this Nostalgia Signing and get a good hitting, good defense 3B.
