Bay Bridge Series Game Wrap 3/30/2017: Giants 3 A's 0

The Giants strung together 5 singles to plate 3 runs in the 7'th inning to back a splendid pitching performance Johnny Cueto and 4 relievers.  Key Lines:

Chris Marrero LF- 1 for 2, 2B.  Marrero had the loudest bat in the lineup as he came within inches of a HR on a ball that hooked inches outside the LF foul pole in an earlier AB before he stroked a double down the RF line.  He made some not terrible catches in LF to boot.  It's looking like Marrero has a good shot at making the team.

Johnny Cueto RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  Cueto was Cueto with all the quick pitching and shimmying.

Cory Gearrin RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  Gearrin his kicked it up a notch at the end of spring training while other bullpen contenders have faltered.

Ty Blach LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  Even if Matt Cain starts the season as the 5'th starter, it's looking more and more like Blach will make the team as a lefty reliever as Josh Osich has failed to show he can get outs.

George Kontos RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  Another dominant inning from Kontos who has had a terrific spring.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K'.  Melancon seems ready to hold down the closer role and make it a shut down inning like the Giants have not had in recent memory.

Jeff Samardzija starts tonight's game with Jharel Cotton taking the mound for the A's in AT&T Park.

Eduardo Nunez will play several innings at SS for the Giants tonight telegraphing the final roster.  It's shaping up as a platoon in LF with Jarrett Parker and Chris Marrero with Gorkys Hernandez the likely bench OF, Conor Gillaspie and Aaron Hill as the reserve IF's and Nick Hundley as the backup catcher.  The only possible question left is if Justin Ruggiano might still have a shot at reserve OF over Hernandez, but right now the tea leaves seem to be pointing to Hernandez.

  1. Marrero: I think it's past 'good chances' at this point. Bochy said he'll be platooning LF with Parker and Marrero is THE candidate for that platoon. I think that sweet catch just inches off the ground in LF last night probably cemented it. The highlight catch is here:

5th Starter: Bochy says he's picked his 5th starter. With Osich scuffling and Smith out, I'm thinking Blach (as you alluded to) is LH relief and Cain is starting. However, I would not be terribly surprised to see Beede called up if Cain can't get in some quality starts.

25-Man: Giants are revealing most, but not all the 25-man roster today with the final players revealed on Saturday. I think your bench is spot on as Hernandez is the defensive/all-position-back-up heir-apparent to Blanco.
