DrB's 2017 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #10 Sandro Fabian

Sandro Fabian, OF.  DOB:  3/6/1998.  B- R, T-R.  6'1", 180 lbs.  International FA

2015 DSL:  .269/.348/.364, 10 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 15 BB, 47 K, 242 AB.
2016 AZL:  .340/.364/.522, 13 2B, 5 3B, 2 HR, 7 BB, 28 K, 159 AB.

Fabian had some mildly interesting numbers in the hitter-unfriendly DSL.  The list of players with those numbers who move up and do a faceplant in Arizona is quite long.  Fabian came up to Arizona and had a mini-breakout and started to generate some national buzz.  They say there is no such thing as bad publicity and Fabian got some mileage out of a pretty nifty bat flip that made the rounds on Youtube.  You can look it up.

Eric Longenhagen of Fangraphs seems to have taken a liking to him and raves about his feel for the barrel(remarkable) and bat-to-ball skills(so good).  He's got a compact body and is short to the ball with some upward plane.  One rap on him is he may be a bit thin in the shoulders and there might not be much projection in the body.  He definitely did not walk off the island, but makes enough contact to keep his K's down around 16%.  He will need to become more selective as he gains experience if he wants the power to develop.  Statistically he reminds me of another Giants prospect I liked a lot who didn't quite make it, Francisco Peguero.

Do the Giants challenge him with an Augusta placement for his age 19 season or do they hold him back and send him to Salem-Keizer for the summer?

  1. Augusta Greenjackets start their schedule April 6, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes June 15.
Do the Giants have many unassigned young players? Do the play amongst themselves with coaches and trainers in Scottsdale?
Is this like Shaw jumping to AAA or easing him in through AA?
At 19, Fabian's possibly resilient, he looked like a different player from his last DSL year to the AZL. What's the history of moving a guy too fast? They drop them back, don't they.
They could do that with Fabian, give him the flavor of (low) A ball, then let him go storm it up in S-K.

    1. Giants have started several players in Augusta then dropped them back to S-K when Short Season starts. In fact, they did exactly that with Christian Arroyo who is now their top prospect.

  2. MLB:
The Giants have agreed to a Minor League contract with veteran shortstop Jimmy Rollins, according to multiple reports. The club has not confirmed the deal, which reportedly also includes an invitation to Spring Training.
Rollins, an Oakland native and graduate of Alameda's Encinal High School, did not play after he was released by the White Sox in June. He hit .221/.295/.329 with two home runs in 41 games for Chicago.
The 38-year-old Rollins is a .264/.324/.418 career hitter in 17 seasons with the Phillies, Dodgers and White Sox. Rollins, the 2007 National League Most Valuable Player, is a four-time Gold Glove Award winner and three-time All-Star.

    Go figure!

    1. There will be tremendous pressure to put Rollins on the 25 man roster for Opening Day. I do not see him as an upgrade on either Tomlinson or Adrianza, so I am not particularly happy with this signing.

Aggressive ranking! We can always hope. Frankie Peggs had 21 BBs in 2 years of DSL and then 21 BBs in his first stateside year. While we don't walk fetish much that is definitely the thing to look for because the K%s look pretty close so far. Great comp!
