Game Wrap 9/24/2015: Padres 5 Giants 4

For the second game in a row, a Giants starting pitcher handed a lead to the bullpen in the late innings and once again the bullpen failed to hold it.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan- 2 for 4, 2 2B, BB, SB(11).  BA= .267.  Maybe Pagan will stay healthy for a full season in his walk year, 2016?  What a tremendous player when he's healthy!

Alejandro De Aza- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .263.  Giants don't have room for all 3 of De Aza, Byrd and Aoki next year.  Who is the odd man out?  De Aza is the only FA of the 3, but it does not seem like it would be too expensive to re-sign him.

Buster Posey- 0 for 5.  BA= .321.  Buster made the outs the Padres needed in this game.  It seems like he is pretty beat up, yet he was behind the dish for Bummy in this game.  He probably should not be out there at all, but what are they going to do?

Matt Duffy- 3 for 5, 2B, 2 SB(11).  BA= .299.  I've been thinking of who might win the Willie Mac Award and Duffy has a heckuva case.

Brandon Crawford- 1 for 2, HR(20), 2 BB.  BA= .257.  Speaking of Willie Mac Awards…. Crawford reaches the 20 HR milestone in what has been a breakout season for him.  Crawford is also going to have a heckuva case to make in an arbitration hearing this offseason.  He is going to get paid!

Marlon Byrd- 2 for 4.  BA= .250.  Byrd seems to be morphing into a line-drive, spray hitter in front of our very eyes.

Kelby Tomlinson- 2 for 4.  BA= .278. Tomlinson has been scuffling, so it's good to see him fight back with a 2-hit game.

Madison Bumgarner- 7 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 9 K.  BA= 2.88.  Bummy gave up a 3 run dinger to Derek Norris early then settled down and handed the game to the bullpen in the 8'th with a 4-3 lead.  In a sideshow, Bummy and Home Plate Umpire Joe West were trading stankeyes throughout the game.  There was one prolonged staredown in the 6'th where West seemed to be almost begging Bummy to say one more word so he could throw him out and Bummy just kept staring back.  Then when Bummy started to go into his motion, West threw up his hands and called timeout for no apparent reason except West wasn't in position to call the pitch.  Maybe the batter asked for time after the prolonged staredown, but it sure looked like it was West who wasn't ready.  The pitch that seemed to precipitate the staredown was clearly a strike and it registered as such on PitchFx according to Jon Miller who was doing the PBP on the TV side that inning.

The Giants start a 3 game series against the A's in Oakland tonight with Mike Leake taking the mound.
