Game Wrap 9/18/2015: D'Backs 2 Giants 0

Madison Bumgarner pitched well enough to win his 19'th game of the season, but the Giants offense mustered just 2 hits against Rubby De La Rosa and the D'Backs bullpen.  Key Lines:

Madison Bumgarner- 8 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.84.  This game illustrates why Wins are a terrible measure of pitching effectiveness.  Ironically, winning 20 games is probably Bummy's only hope for winning the Cy Young, which he probably would not win anyway due to increased savviness by the people who vote on such things.

Mike Leake takes the mound today facing the D'Backs in game 2 of the weekend series.

  1. Doc, from your comments earlier in the week you seem to prefer signing De Aza and letting Aoki go. Not sure I follow the logic; haven't seen anything from De Aza that leaps out as particularly useful. Supposed to be a better fielder, last night notwithstanding, but I don't see him as a leadoff hitter or anything other than competition with Blanco for 4th OF. What's your thinking on this?

    1. Mainly due to the uncertainty of full recovery from concussions. Even though the injuries were not his fault, Aoki has been a non-factor in the second half and the recovery time from concussions is notoriously uncertain. Even though De Aza's UZR numbers are about the same as Aoki's, he "looks" like a better defender and he seems to have a big more gap power with very similar OBP rates.

I just think the Giants might look at Aoki's recovery as uncertain enough that they might rather go after re-signing De Aza first and if successful, not picking up Aoki's option.

    2. Just looked up their IsoP's and yes, De Aza has actually quite a bit more power than Aoki.
