What a difference a day off at home makes! The Giants returned from a 10 game road trip with their tails between their legs. After a day off, they showed up at AT&T Park all bright eyed and busy tailed again and took it to the Padres with nice pitching from Jake Peavy, solid defense and a persistent offensive attack that wore down Padres starter Andrew Cashner. Key Lines:
Angel Pagan- 1 for 5. BA= .261. Pagan had just one hit in the game, but it drove in the first run. He also made a spectacular catch above the CF wall to rob Matt Kemp of a HR. Pagan is a bit of a polarizing player, especially when it comes to measuring his defense, but when he is fully healthy, which he finally appears to be, he can make spectacular plays. Look up the video on this one!
Matt Duffy- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .300. Nobody grinds out AB's like the Duffman and he uses the entire field. In this one, he pulled a single through the hole between 3'rd and short and another where he poked one into RF. After Cashner opened the game with two quick K's on Pagan and De Aza, Duffy worked him for the first of 2 walks which pushed up his pitch count and set the stage for the grind down.
Marlon Byrd- 3 for 4, BB. BA= .248. Has Byrd already bought into the Giants hitting philosophy? He certainly has been keeping the line moving lately.
Kelby Tomlinson- 1 for 5, 2 SB(4). BA= .298. Tomlinson hit into 3 FC's but stole 2 bases and scored 3 runs. He has multiple ways to beat you.
Ehire Adrianza- 2 for 3, 2 BB. BA= .168. Nice game at the plate for Adrianza who might have done more to take down Cashner than any other hitter in the lineup. He also made several tough plays at SS look very easy.
Jarrett Parker- 1 for 1, 2B. BA= .200. Parker came up late as a PH and hit a bomb to the warning track in Triples Alley that bounced way up into the stands for a ground rule double. That might have been the loudest double I've ever seen! Fun to watch!
Jake Peavy- 7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.15. I was surprised to see just 2 K's in his boxscore line. It seemed like he pitched better than that. His stuff looked crisp and he was locating well. Nice rhythm. He did benefit from some nice fielding plays including Pagan's catch, but got mostly weak contact and kept his pitch count way down.
Cory Gearrin- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00. Gearrin looked absolutely fierce against the 2 batters he faced. Very nasty looking slider. He's pitching to stay on the 40 man roster through the offseason and the opportunity to win a bullpen spot in the spring.
Brett Bochy- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00. Young Boch got to pitch the 9'th inning. He showed a below average FB but with good command and good secondary stuff. He got a visit to the mound from his pop after allowing a single to Matt Kemp and HBP to Upton. The crowd had some fun with it chanting Bochy! Bochy! Bochy! as he struck out the final batter of the game.
Madison Bumgarner faces Ian Kennedy today in game 2 of the series.
