Down on the Farm: 8/9/2015

AAA  Sacramento River Cats outslugged the Fresno Grizzlies 9-3:

Darren Ford(CF)- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(9).  BA= .263.
Ryan Lollis(1B)- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(4), SF.  BA= .339.
Juan Perez(RF)- 1 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .265.
Trevor Brown(Catcher)- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .286.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 5.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.30.
Steven Okert(LHP)- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.01.
Mike Broadway(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.07.

Okert seems to have righted his ship.  Blackburn has had a tantalizing season, but is it enough to project him to the next level?

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels outscored the Altoona Curve 8-6:

Myles Schroder(LF)- 2 for 5, HR(6).  BA= .247.
Austin Slater(2B)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .300.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .265.
Engel Beltre(CF)- 3 for 5.  BA= .286.
Jesus Galindo(RF)- 2 for 5, SB(2).  BA= .226.
Joe Biagini(RHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.37.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.63.

It's getting to be a challenge to keep track of all the Johnsons in the Giants organization!

*********************************************************************************

High A  Lake Elsinore Storm blanked the San Jose Giants 3-0:

Martin Agosta(RHP)- 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.34.

I'm going to call a breakout season for Agosta next year in Richmond.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Rome Braves destroyed the Augusta Greenjackets 12-1:

Will Callaway(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .278.
Chuckie Jones(CF)- 0 for 1, 3 BB.  BA= .247.
Dusten Knight(RHP)- 3 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.76.
Sam Coonrod(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.14.

I'm thinking Coonrod might not be used to the grind of starting every 5'th day and hit a wall.  Giants switched him up here with Knight with Knight starting and Coonrod coming out of the bullpen.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Hillsboro Hops defeated the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4-2:

Shilo McCall(LF)- 1 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .231.
Luis Pino(RHP)- 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.43.

Rookie AZL  Giants were idle.

DSL  Giants were idle.

  1. I think the Giants have had the most Johnson in the past five seasons.

    1. An organization can never had too many Johnsons.

  2. Doc, what's your take on Broadway? Has he figured something out here? His numbers are pretty dominant this year, pretty much unlike his entire undistinguished minor league career. He seems to be a bullpen candidate for 2016.

    1. Seems like Broadway or Okert would be the next guys called up. I expect to see both in September. Broadway throws very hard. Generally speaking, PCL pitching numbers translate pretty well. So yeah, seems like Broadway could help a MLB club right now.

    2. Doc, If Giants can keep within striking distance of the Dodgers; I agree that is our best route to the playoffs. What does your September call up list look like? The September call ups could save the season I believe.

    3. Sept call ups will be limited by the availability of 40 man roster space. I have not studied that lately to see where there might be room.

    4. Non-DL pitchers currently on the 40:

      Ray Black
      Mike Broadway
      Joan Gregorio
      Cody Hall
      Derek Law

Giants site has Scutaro Listed among the 40 players, though it notes that he's on the 40-man roster.

Is Timmy a candidate to be removed if the Giants want to add for Sept. Call-ups?

    5. Scutaro was placed on the 40 man again then pushed to 60-day DL to reopen the spot again.

I Doubt That Timmy gets dropped, if anyone goes down, it would be Parker first.

    6. There are 39, so one spot open for someone. Plus another if Parker is DFA. Hudson or Lincecum could be 60DL to open up to two more spots if necessary, but who needs spots? Blackburn? Beede? Okert?

  3. I'd like to see Lollis called back up because, at this point, I really think Pagan needs to be on the DL.

    1. I'd much rather see Parker up. Lollis and Tomlinson offer the same best case scenario production. Parker offers more power and speed while still being able to play CF.

    2. Lollis seems to be a better defender, especially as Parker is really playing badly in RF this year. Lollis is also a lot, lot better with the bat (.336 BA vs .278 BA in the offense/HR enhanced PCL). And while Parker has some decent HR power, he's not a huge power guy and the price of that power seems to be that Parker has been striking out at nearly 40% in AAA to go with his career 35% SO rate.

If I were to make a comparison to current Giants -- Lollis looks to me like he's, pretty much, another Blanco. Parker is Maxwell without Maxwell's redeeming defensive features. We really don't need another Maxwell. Whereas a Blanco-type will make a good utility OFer.
