Down on the Farm: 6/10/2015

AAA  Sacramento River Cats were idle.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 5-1:

Kelby Tomlinson(2B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .330.
Mac Williamson(RF)- 2 for 2, BB, HBP.  BA= .300.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .277.
Joe Biagini(RHP)- 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 10/3.  ERA= 1.76.

Big Joe keeps pounding the strike zone.  He's cut his walk rate in half from last year and bumped his GB rate closer to 2.  Q:  Is Joe Biagini a better prospect right now than Kyle Crick?

High A  San Jose Giants smothered the Bakersfield Blaze 10-2:

Seth Harrison(CF)- 2 for 2, 2B, 3 BB, SB(3).  BA= .266.
Austin Slater(2B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .285.
Ryder Jones(3B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .280.
Brian Ragira(1B)- 1 for 4, HR(3), BB.  BA= .203.
Jason Forjet(RHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.13.
Christian Jones(LHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.52.
Luis Ysla(LHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 8.59.

Ryder Jones has made it halfway through the season with a .280 BA.  He seems to be holding up to the grind a bit better this season.  Jones has a 3.00 ERA since coming back from a DL stint.  Ysla has a 3.60 ERA over his last 9 appearances.

Low A  Greenville Drive topped the Augusta Greenjackets 3-2 in 10 innings:

DJ Snelton(LHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 10/2.  ERA= 5.40.
Carlos Diaz(LHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.10.
Yoan Moncada(2B, Drive)- 0 for 4, 3 K's.  BA= .210.

DSL  Giants outscored the Mariners 10-6:

Juan Rodriguez(CF, 20 yo)- 3 for 6, 2B.  BA= .343.
Robinson Medrano(RF, 19 yo)- 3 for 4, BB.   BA= .378.
Francisco Medina(3B, 17 yo)- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .346.

Francisco Medina is my new favorite DSL prospect.

  1. IMO, if there's a one-game playoff like the wildcard game and I have to choose between Biagini and Crick as a starter, I'll take Biagini over Crick because Biagini can give me the same results with more innings pitched over Crick and Crick's just a mess right now that I'll maybe bring him up from the bullpen to pitch me a couple of innings. I placed Crick #5 in my top 10 list on my blog which is pretty new (here's the link if you want to take a look: http://wrenzieblogssports.blogspot.com/2015/06/mlb-giants-top-10-prospects-post-draft.html) and I honestly say that I forgot to include Biagini because he's 25 but I can really see that he's performing really well right now and I might place him in the next 10 in my next list.

    1. I don't think Biagini is ever going to be an ace starter in MLB, but I could easily envision him coming up in another year or two and doing what Heston is doing(not necessarily pitching a no-no). Crick still has that ace potential, but the likelihood of him ever achieving that is getting smaller with each year he posts walk rates in the 6+/9 range.

    2. I love guys that consistently perform and I think you do too DrB and right now, Crick's just consistent on being inconsistent and I can't really trust him the ball as a starter right now. I think Biagini is a back-end guy too like Heston but he's just rolling all season long in AA while Crick is not fooling me at all with his ERA. Maybe something just clicked on Biagini and he just reduce his walk rate by a lot?

  2. Wow, what has Biagini done to become so dominant this year? The last couple of years he looked like an organizational kinda of guy.

  3. The answer to the Joe Biagini conundrum? Easy - he's a UCD grad!

    Go Aggies!
