Spring Training Game Wrap 4/2/2015: A's 8 Giants 2

Jake Peavy was shelled, the Giants played sloppy OF defense and HR's by Angel Pagan and Brandon Belt were way too little, too late as the Giants dropped game 1 of the 2015 Bay Bridge Series.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan(CF)- 1 for 4, HR(1). BA= .171.  Pagan put a nice swing on a ball from the right side off Kazmir.  He also kicked a ball in right-CF that had caromed off the RF wall that allowed Sam Fuld to score on what otherwise was a triple.

Brandon Belt(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(4).  BA= .369.  Belt took the lead in spring HR's and was back at his usual position at 1B.

Brandon Crawford(SS)- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.  Nice game at the plate for Crawford without much lineup support from teammates.  He could not do much with ball after ball scorched past him on defense.

Jake Peavy(RHP)- 3.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 9.64.  There was some sloppy D behind him, but make no mistake, Peavy wasn't fooling anyone as you could almost see steam hissing off the balls hit by the A's batters.  Peavy has run hot and cold of late and he is definitely not hot right now.  Season hasn't started yet, though.

Ryan Vogelsong(RHP)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 6.45.  A bright spot in the game.  Vogey looked really sharp in his 3 innings of work.  He's going to make sure the guys in the rotation aren't feeling too comfortable in their roles as the season gets started.

Jeremy Affeldt pitched a scoreless inning and Santiago Casilla gave up a bomb to Billy Butler.

Not much new on the roster front except Bochy dropped that the Giants are considering rostering 13 pitchers which would mean both Kontos and Machi would make it and possibly only 1 out of Duffy, Arias and Adrianza depending on whether Travis Ishikawa starts the season on the DL or not.  Right now, I'd have to guess it's a virtual certainty that he does.

Bruce Bochy and Brian Sabean agreed to contract extensions through 2019.  Sabes might take on the title of President of Baseball Operations while Bobby Evans officially becomes the GM.

Matt Cain starts tonight's game 2 in AT&T Park facing A's newcomer Kendall Graveman.  Hmm….wonder how his family got their name?

  1. The big issues seem to be a end-of-the-order RP and a reserve IFer to PH.
Geez. IMO, those issues might merit a WAR of 1 for the month!
There seem to be real problems, excepting Belt and a couple backups.
Sure hope someone finds the "ON" switch before Monday.

  2. mad dog didnt have a lot of great things to say about most of this year's giants, but he did say some very nice things about craw, calling him one of the most underrated players in the majors and he expects him to have a breakout season

  4. I don't know, maybe this is the highpoint for Oakland in 2015.

  5. Team did not look good last night and I am not buying that it is a spring training thing. There are some bright spots but there may be more holes than we anticipated to. No need to push the Panik (pun intended) button just yet but there are some red flags that you would hope not to see this close to the start of the season.

  6. Giants may see only 1 or 2 LH starters in their first two weeks (14 games), before LA.
LH bats, like Ishikawa if healthy, are probably more important than RH to start the season.
