Spring Training Game Wrap: Giants 5 Dodgers 5

Matt Cain pitched a perfect 2 innings and the kids kept hitting as the Giants and Dodgers battled to a tie in the desert.  Key Lines:

Mac Williamson(PH-RF)- 1 for 2.  BA= .375.  Mac is having a nice spring in limited action.  Just having him healthy and playing is big plus to the organization.

Adam Duvall(3B)- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .235.  It should be noted that Duvall also made a very nice diving stop of a ball Juan Uribe scalded down the 3B line, then jumped to his feet and threw him out from behind 3B.  Very nifty play from a much maligned(at least on defense) third baseman.

Daniel Carbonell(PR-CF)- 1 for 1, BB, CS.  BA= .222.  The single was of the infield variety on a ball hit to SS, but Carbonell is holding his own in the early spring.  Not ready for the majors, but I'm eager to see what he can do in AA.

Jarrett Parker(RF-LF)- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .385.  More goodness from Jarrett Parker.

Matt Cain- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 0.00.  No K's but it's great to just to see Cainer pitching effectively.  His health is a huge key to the season, IMO.

Ryan Vogelsong- 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 10.80.  Peripherals were good, but Vogey sometimes gets BABIP'd for some reason.  This time it was a mistake to Yasiel Puig.  My impression of  Puig is that good pitches will get him out, but you do not want to ever make a mistake to him.

Chris Heston- 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.50.  Fringy numbers from a fringy pitcher, I guess.

Hunter Strickland- 1 IP,  0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 9.00.  Second appearance in a row without allowing a HR or a run.  Let's hope this is the start of something good.  Nowhere to go but up after those two dingers in his first two appearances.

Yusmeiro Petit will get the start tomorrow facing Padres with Kyle Crick to follow.

Around the League:  Mark Appel, former first round draft pick of the Houston Astros, will miss some time with the proverbial "forearm tightness."

Vogey-Nice to have him in the pen
Strickland-Getting punched in the face like that in the playoffs. Then, give up a HR on first appearance of spring training. That might shake some guys up.Let's see what he's made of.

  2. I think before the Puig dinger, Parker couldn't reach a Rollins ball off the wall in right. I don't know if he played it into a triple or if Blanco would have caught it.

  3. any comments on the pablo comments about the org?

not sure why some players insist on burning bridges for no reason

on his fb page, huff took pablo to task....pretty much saying that the reason pablo was so unhappy was because the giants made sure that he worked out and there is absolutely no reason why he shouldnt have been able to get along with everyone

not sure why the giants felt the need to respond to pablo's accusations....those in the know, know that they dealt with him fairly

pablo better perform in boston, or he wont know what hit him....the fans, papers and the guys on sports talk can and will be downright cruel

he really doesnt know how good he had it

    bacci

and great to see that cain looks solid

still think hunter is gonna start the year in sacto and work on some stuff

    1. Well, I've pretty much said all those things about Pablo already in other posts back when the signing went down and in the comments after the last post. I agree. Pablo seems a bit naive about how good he had it in SF with the fans who were willing to overlook a whole lot of baggage to see what he could do and not what he could not. I also agree Boston fans will not be nearly as forgiving. From the looks of early spring training pics and Pablo's history of weight gain as the season progresses, we could be seeing a 300 lb Pablo in the white Boston uniform by the end of the season. It will be interesting to see how Red Sox nation reacts to that and how Pablo responds.

As for why he is posting stuff like that on Facebook, I'd guess he's already feeling some heat and is feeling quite defensive about why he spurned the Giants.

    2. sorry, i probably wasnt clear...it was huff who was posting about pablo's comments

despite his issues in the final year of his contract, huff appreciated his time with the org

seems to me that pablo has a lot of growing up to do amd is getting really bad advice from the people around him

    3. I agree about your having said all those things before. Interesting no one on the team has responded to his comment, something about only two guys, Bochy and Pence.

I think the team has moved on.

Too many young guys to root for to make the team or have a good season. That ought to keep the fans occupied.

    4. I guess Camp Panda left a mark after all! What's kind of strange is that the Giants treated Pence the same way - prove out and we'll pay you. To feel disrespected with the stat lines he put up... I have a pet theory the only reason Pablo singled out Pence is that Pence asked the crowd if they wanted Pablo back and did a big rah-rah for him at the parade. Good riddance to a man-child who is about to crash and burn, its going to get ugly in Bean Town.

    5. Bacci,

DID the Giants respond? I have not seen anything from the Giants. I have only heard about Huff's reaction, and he is not in the org anymore.

About Huff's reaction, though, it is a bit shocking to hear that Panda was not liked by the guys on the '10 team. Kuiper pretty much confirmed this morning that that was rather well known behind the scenes. He just never thought that would ever be made public.

    6. evans came out with a statement that the giants dealt with pablo in good faith....and i see no reason for him to have even said that

im not surprised that the team had issues with pablo...his lack of discipline and conditioning hurt them....

  4. I'm not too worried about Vogey in the pen. His velocity always ticks up to the mid 90s when he's amped. If that becomes his regular velocity in relief then he'll be a fine option out of the pen. He has a diverse number of pitches to give people a lot of different looks in a short stints.
