Game Wrap 9/5/2014: Giants 8 Tigers 2

The Giants summoned echoes of 2012 as they jumped on Rick Porcello for 6 runs in 3 innings before a long rain delay.  Jake Peavy pitched before and after the delay and was nails for 6 innings allow just 2 unearned runs and the Giants win going away.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik- 2 for 5.  BA= .321.  2-Hit Joe gets his 2 hits.  The internets is starting to buzz about him.

Pablo Sandoval- 2 for 5, HR(16).  BA= .289.  Pabs had hit a speed bump in his drive for .300 but he picked it up tonight and hit another dinger against the Tigers, who must be thinking about signing him as a FA this offseason.

Gregor Blanco- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .263.  Blanco's error from Colorado was reversed, but he made one tonight to end his string of 300+ errorless games.  He still got his fWAR score up to 1.9 and climbing.  Here are Blanco's stat lines from the last 3 seasons including this one:

2012:  .244/.333/.344, 5 HR, 26 SB, 56 R, 34 RBI, 11.3% BB, 23% K, .318 BABIP, 2.3 fWAR, 453 PA.
2013:  .265/.341/.350, 3 HR, 14 SB, 50 R, 41 RBI, 10.2% BB, 18.6% K, .328 BABIP, 2.9 fWAR, 511 PA.
2014:  .263/.344/.376, 4 HR, 14 SB, 40 R, 32 RBI, 9.9% BB, 18.2 % K, .321 BABIP, 1.9 fWAR, 363 PA.

With almost a month left in this season, Blanco's dollar value to the Giants is $35 M.  His total salary for the 3 seasons is $4.4 M for a surplus value of $30.4 M.  He is coming into his final arbitration year and will be 31 years old next year.

Brandon Crawford- 3 for 4, Sac.  BA= .234.  Crawford is hitting .323 over his last 10 games.

Jake Peavy- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.01.  Peavy was not going to let a chance for a W slip away in the rain.  He preserved the bullpen in the process.  Very gutsy start despite the large margin.

Tim Lincecum- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.67.  Timmy looks like he's cleaned up his delivery a lot.  He had excellent command and set the Tigers down in order in the 9'th on just 5 pitches, all strikes.

The Win kept the Giants at a 2 games deficit in the NL West to the Dodgers, who topped the D'Backs 2-1 and how bad are the D'Backs without Paul Goldschmidt anyway?  Their lead for the top Wild Card playoff spot remained at 3 games over the Brewers, who beat the Cardinals in the first game of their NL Central showdown.  The Giants lead the Braves by 4 games and the Pirates by 5.

Madison Bumgarner faces David Price in a day game today.

  1. Detroit might as well go after Lincecum as well as Pablo.

Thanks for the stats on Blanco - fairly consistent and productive output. I remember first reading about him playing in the Venezuela winter ball, here. Almost 3 years later and the team and us fans have certainly enjoyed his contributions.

    1. Of the top 50 fWAR OF's from this season, out of which Blanco ranks #49, he has the 25'th highest cumulative fWAR over the past 3 seasons. Of course, the #49 ranking for this year could go up if he continues to have a strong September.

This means that over the past 3 seasons, Blanco would likely be the best OF on at least 5 teams in MLB.
