Game Wrap 7/18/2014: Giants 9 Marlins 1

If the Giants were looking to make a statement about the second half of the season coming out of the All-Star Break, they certainly accomplished that with a route of the Marlins, at team they have had trouble with for years, in Miami.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik- 2 for 5.  BA= .232.  Panik is hitting .274 over his last 10 games.

Buster Posey- 3 for 4.  BA= .281.  Posey is hitting .232 over his last 10 games including this one.

Pablo Sandoval- 2 for 5, HR(12).  BA= .274.  Pabs is on a tear hitting .324 over his last 10 games and .414 over his last 7.

Michael Morse- 3 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .278.  Morse's bat seemed like it has slowed down a bit before the break.

Brandon Crawford- 1 for 2, HR(8), SF.  BA= .242.  Crawford's was another bat that seemed to have slowed down before the break.

Madison Bumgarner- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.38.  No GSHR, but the Giants did not need his bat in this one.

The Win enabled the Giants to climb back into the lead in the NL West standings by percentage points over the Dodgers who lost to the Cardinals 3-2.  The Dodgers are looking like anything but world beaters right now with Puig cooled off since June 1 and Hanley Ramirez apparently chronically injured.

This could come down to which team helps themselves the most at the trade deadline.

Matt Cain reportedly has a "cranky" right elbow which explains why he was moved back in the post-All-Star rotation.

Marco Scutaro has a sore neck but was available as a PH off the bench.

Tim Hudson faces Henderson Alvarez in game 2 of the series tonight.

  1. looks like the team really needed the 4 days of mental rest

bochy admitted that since st, cain's elbow has been "cranky"

i think trade wise, giants have to focus on an of and pitcher, but im not sure they have enough to give

dodgers want a pitcher. but will have to sacrifice their future to get one....they def arent the same team that went on that huge tear last season

    1. Welcome to the party, Bacci, but yeah, that sure seems like some dirty pool that the Astros are playing and they got burned big time. They've now blown the last 2 of their 3 consecutive #1 overalls.

Now, we don't know for sure what the MRI actually showed. If it showed a partial tear, then they may well be better off letting the pick go and taking the comp #2 overall pick next year. On the other hand, if it just showed a small but intact UCL compared to "normal", then I think Aiken may have grounds for a lawsuit claiming damage to his future earnings. On the other hand again, though, the Astros did offer him a contract within the boundaries of the CBA, so he may not have any grounds at all.

Just a really, really nasty story. I can easily envision future draft prospects, especially pitchers, simply refusing to take physicals for the Astros.

  3. and more news

friars throw in towel and trade street to halos for 4 mlb ready prospects,

this is not a good sign for either the giants or bums as it appears to be a sellers market

friars improve their future greatly with this trade....but i still question the philosophy of their new owners, who seem intent on spending as little as they can on the big club

    1. I've seen Alvarez pitch and he has serious heat and is a legit future closer. I don't really know anything about the other prospects the Padres got. The Angels farm system is not highly ranked, but yet they seem to be able to bring prospects to the majors and have them succeed, i.e. Kole Calhoun, Peter Bourjos

    2. i saw rondon play. good range and glove. no pop in bat.

kinda shocked that the friars didnt ask for a second arm from the IE team, rather than rondon....halos are stocked with lots of pen potential and i really dont see rondo being more than a platoon kind of guy
