Game Wrap 5/31/2014: Cardinals 2 Giants 0

Yusmeiro Petit was a Gamer subbing in for Matt Cain's scheduled start, but the Giants offense looked flat and never got anything going against Michael Wacha and the Cardinals' bullpen.  2 separate rain delays did nothing to help the Giants build momentum.  In the end, it was a throwaway game they probably did not expect to win, but it's a shame Petit's fine effort went for naught.  Key Lines:

Yusmeiro Petit- 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA=4.60.  Petit gave up fewer hits than Wacha and the same number of base runners.  It's just that one of those hits was Oscar Taveras' first MLB HR just as the first rainstorm was closing in.  There was talk that it is tough to face a batter you don't have a "book" on yet, but Petit clearly made a location mistake with a breaking ball and paid the price.  It's always been his Achlles Heel.

Michael Wacha(Cardinals)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.65.  Wacha works at almost a frenetic pace.  Giants needed to get him out of that pace.  Step out of the box, foul off more pitches.  None of that happened and Wacha made it look easy.

Trevor Rosenthal- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(16).  ERA= 4.10.  Rosenthal struck out Pence, Sandoval and Morse, all on FB's greater than 95 MPH.  Anyone still want to make a case that he and the Cardinals bullpen problems are due to anything more than sample size?

The Dodgers are blowing out the Pirates in LA so the Giants lead in the NL West will likely shrink to 6.5 games over the Dodgers who will take sole possession of 2'nd place.  The Rockies lost again to Cleveland to remain 7.5 games back in 3'rd place.  The Padres and D'Backs remain mired in 4'th and 5'th place.

Tim Hudson tries for a 3-1 series win tomorrow facing right-hander Lance Lynn.
