Game Wrap 4/30/2014: Giants 3 Padres 2

This game was not as close as it looked as Tim Hudson came 1 out short of a complete game with Yasmani Grandal's 2 out HR in the 9'th made it look close.  Key Lines:

Hunter Pence- 2 for 4, SB(5).  BA= .262.  Pence seems to have toned down his swing a bit in an effort to raise the BA.  Early in the month, it looked like he was trying to set a HR distance record on every swing.  I don't get that feeling watching him now.

Buster Posey- 2 for 4.  BA= .264.  Posey and Pence getting hot at the same time bodes well for the upcoming road trip.

Brandon Hicks- 1 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .213.  You wanted Dan Uggla?  You got him, at a fraction of the price!

Tim Hudson- 8.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 15/5.  ERA= 2.17.  It was HR weather at AT&T Park tonight, so what does Tim Hudson do?  He gets 21 of 26 outs by either ground ball or strikeout.  That left only 5 chances for the Padres to hit it out of the park.  They did it just once with 1 out to go in the game.

Sergio Romo- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(7).  ERA= 2.38.

The win improved the NL West leading Giants record to 17-11.  The Rockies lost to the last place D'Backs 5-4 to drop in to a 2'nd place tie with the Dodgers, 1.5 games behind the Giants.  The Dodgers  kept pace with a 6-4 win over the Twin in Minnesota.  The D'Backs remained 9.5 games behind the leaders.

The Giants now get a day off to travel to Atlanta with Tim Lincecum facing Mike Minor who is coming off the DL.

    1. OK, OK! Since this is obviously a parody of somebody, I'm going to lighten up and let it stay. LOL! Bacci, is that you?

Seriously? Pitchers have figured out that Belt cannot catch up with high heat. He's going to have to make a counter-adjustment and I'm not sure how he does that. It will be interesting, and probably painful, to watch this progress.

    2. Another anon. Never seen a player like Belt before, I remember Kuip saying when he was batting against Colorado if am not wrong, that he can look like a stud at the place and other times look like he's never batted or even played baseball. He just comes across as a strange guy.

If he can at least keep hitting dingers, am ok with that. a .250 30hr 90rbi season is good enough for me, even with a low OBP. Then next year he can focus on working on the avg.

    3. no doc, im not that crazy

although i will note that it seemed that belt felt fulfilled after his bloop double and went back to swinging over the ball

huge prob if he chooses not even to take direction from the thrill

gotta be impressed with craw's offensive improvement....now there is someone who worked hard in the off season and is always open to suggestion

    4. Bacci, I guess I missed all the "Belt did nothing and was lazy this offseason" stories that came out. Seriously, I get your opinion that he is not as good as we all think, but your implication that he didn't work hard this offseason goes too far. You just came up with a bunch of straw men regarding Belt that have no basis in fact.

I've come to grips with the fact that this is who Belt is. He always has a couple stretches during the year where he looks completely lost. He did it in 2012 and he did it last year. But he always seems to end the year with numbers that make us go, "Hey, he had a pretty good year!" So, I'm confident he'll figure things out. But I'm also confident that Belt will never be the hitter I thought he was when he rocketed through the minors in 2010. And I'm okay with that because I think Belt is still an above average 1B in not only the NL, but also the AL.

  2. Atlanta will be a good test.

The last time I checked, their pitchers had the best staff ERA, by quite a bit, in the NL.
