Dr B's 2014 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #44 Luis Ysla

Luis Ysla, LHP.  6'1", 185 lbs.  DOB:  4/27/1992

Rookie AZL:  4-0, 2.65, 51 IP, 13 BB, 52 K.

Luis Ysla is a bit of a mystery man.  He showed up on the AZL roster in 2013 seemingly out of nowhere and proceeded to put up impressive numbers throughout the summer including one game where he struck out 9 batters in 6 IP.  I did some digging and didn't come up with much.  He was signed as a 20 yo out of Venezuela for a mere $7500.  Keith Law scouted him and had his FB going 88-93 MPH with a sweeping slurve, "filling up the strike zone."  I read reports that I would categorize as rumors of his FB getting up to 96.

I still don't know quite what to make of him.  He is certainly not your typical IFA signing given his age.  How much and what kind of experience did he have prior to his signing?  I would expect him to be part of the Augusta rotation in 2014.  Law thinks his floor is MLB lefty specialist, but seems to think he can be developed into a starter.

  1. Jason Parks from BP had some pretty nice things to say about him last month. You're right, there's almost NOTHING out there on him at the moment. I hadn't even seen the Law scouting reports. I did see the "rumors" over at MCC of him hitting 97 last year. 88-93 sounds more appropriate though... If he were throwing 97 from the left side, I have a hard time believing he wouldn't have been discovered earlier. Either way, I'm interested to see if he starts the year in Augusta. Definitely a sleeper name to remember.

    1. Sometimes, mystery prospects are good.

    2. IIRC, Panda was a relative mystery prospect as well. He turned out to be not that bad...

  2. "filling up the strike zone"

That doesn't sound particularly nasty. Oh well, every organization needs arms to fill their minor league bullpens.

    1. Uh….I'm pretty sure Keith Law, whatever you think of him, meant that as a compliment.

  3. Don't think much of Klaw.

I'm just looking for nasty. I got excited by your Pat Young review!

    1. It's not like Pat Young is without his warts. It's good to have both Pat Young and Luis Ysla in the organization. I should have added that Law said Ysla looked like he was just playing catch with the catcher out there. Very relaxed!
