Down on the Farm: 2013 Giants Draft Review #1-10

1.  Christian Arroyo, SS:  AZL  .326/.388/.511, 18 2B, 5 3B, 2 HR, 3 SB, 19 BB, 32 K in 184 AB.  Terrific pro debut showing off a top notch hit tool with gap power while maintaining solid K and BB ratios. Can't ask for much more than this from your first rounder out of the gate.  Time will tell if it holds up.

2.  Ryder Jones, 3B:  AZL  .317/.394/.400, 1 HR, 14 BB, 38 K in 145 AB.  Hit for a nice BA with some walks, a lot of K's and not much power.  The power should come.

3.  Chase Johnson, RHP:  AZL  1-0, 1.69, 5.1 IP, 1 BB, 7 K's.  Short Season  3-2, 4.17, 41 IP, 12 BB, 37 K, GO/AO= 1.79.  Hard throwing RHP started off strong then allowed 14 of his 19 ER in his last 3 starts.  Did not pitch many innings in college, so may have hit a wall.

4.  Brian Ragira, 1B/OF:  AZL  .357/.379/.464 in 28 AB.  Short Season  .263/.371/.391, 3 HR, 26 BB, 54 K in 179 AB.  A bit of a mixed bag here.  Drew a lot of walks but also K'd a lot.  Hit for a little power.  Biggest positive is he played more OF than 1B.  A bit of a test of whether the Giants can develop a hitter.

5.  Dan Slania, RHP:  Short Season  1-1, 3.95, 13.2 IP, 3 BB, 14 K, 3 Saves.  Jumbo sized college reliever.  Nice pro debut in a small sample.  I really like this pick as I was thinking he would go much higher in the draft.

6.  Nick Vander Tuig, RHP:  3 levels  0-0, 11.70, 10 IP, 4 BB, 10 K.  Signed late due to college WS obligations.  Was likely exhausted from the college postseason.  Next season will be a better measure.  May have a limited ceiling but obviously knows how to pitch.

7.  Brandon Bednar, SS:  Short Season  .272/.332/.406, 6 HR, 11 SB, 14 BB, 28 K in 202 AB.  Tall(6'4") college SS.  Very athletic. Will probably move off SS.  Could be a future utility guy.  Solid pro debut.

8.  Tyler Horan, OF:  AZL  .245/.321/.388 in 49 AB.  Short Season  .295/.372/.460, 4 HR, 4 SB, 20 BB, 34 K in 176 AB.  I picked this guy out way back last offseason as a Day 2 draft target and my dreams came true on draft day!  Terrific hitter who showed it in his pro debut.  Corner OF but deceptively fast for his size(6'2", 230 lb).

9. Donald Snelton, LHP:  AZL  3-1, 1.57, 34.1 IP, 13 BB, 39 K, GO/AO= 2.37.  Tall, hard-throwing LHP.  Good numbers at a low starting level.  Lots of upside here.

10.  Tyler Rogers, RHP:  AZL  0-0, 0.00, 7 IP, 3 BB, 15 K.  Short Season  1-1, 3.10, 20.1 IP, 9 BB, 16 K.  Sidearming reliever out of Austin Peay St.  Moved up to SJ for the playoffs.  Unimpressive in the game I saw.  I like to have 1 sidearmer from each side in any bullpen, just for a different look.

  1. In five years, every expert who called this draft "the worst in MLB" is going to have egg on their faces. Book it.

    1. I hope so too. It at least is better than advertised by the experts so far, by a lot, Arroyo has been pretty good, so have others.
