Hot Tip: Instructional League Videos

Check out some excellent Instructional League videos that are linked over on Cove Chatter in the Twitter column on the right hand side of the site.

Kyle Crick- 95-97 on the FB.  Changeup goes 88!  Man, does he ever look like a clone of Matt Cain?  Still with some pretty obvious command issues.

Keury Mella- FB 93-95 with a nasty curve and slider to go with it.  Looked dominant in the one frame filmed.  I agree with Covechatter.  He may well be the #2 pitching prospect in the system!

Angel Villalona- Big kid with a ferocious swing.  Didn't do much in this extremely small sample size.

Ryder Jones- another small sample.  Can't really get much of a read.

  1. Great videos! Crick's fastball is wild, no surprise, but you are absolutely right about the Matt Cain comp. I was thinking the same thing! Need to get those 2 in a rotation together soon... Mella, wow. That's all I can say. Keep throwing gas, kid.

  2. Any chance Mella's 93-95 fastball go even higher?

How old is the kid? He could possible be #2, like you say.

    1. Mella is 20. 2012 in DSL, 2013 in AZL. Looking forward to seeing him get a bump (hopefully) to Augusta next year. The video was impressive, and eye-opening. Abbreviated delivery, a little like David Price. Fastball gets on the hitter in a hurry. I think I was even more impressed with his breaking ball. Looks like a strong prospect!

  3. have a hard time putting a kid from that level at #2...despite the "stuff"....Especially with what the Giants have "above"....This coming year should tell a lot more.

    1. Stuff is stuff. I have no problem putting a kid in rookie ball or the DSL #1 if they have the stuff.

    2. As starting pitchers go, I'll bet Mella has the #2 fastball in the Giants org. Doesn't seem like any of the other guys have top-notch velocity. Stratton and Agosta were supposed to be mid-90's, but didn't sound like they were this year. Escobar has supposedly hit 96 before, but he and Mejia both seem like 91-93 guys. Same for Blackburn and Flores. Blach may roll on even less... 89-91? Gregorio is about the only other Giants SP I've heard pop 95 this year. Not saying velocity is everything, and I'm not necessarily saying Mella is the #2 prospect in the system right now either. But, for a guy who's relatively unknown, seeing the video opened my eyes. Big body, nasty breaking ball, plus velocity. In my eyes, he's got a shot to surpass the rest of the group (aside from Crick obviously). Exciting stuff.
