Game Wrap 6/23/2013: Marlins 7 Giants 2

The Marlins blew open a close game with 4 runs in the top of the 9'th inning.  Key Lines:

Gregor Blanco- 2 for 4.  BA= .304.  Blanco continues to do his job at the top of the lineup.

Marco Scutaro- 2 for 4.  BA= .332.  The first two batters went a combined 4 for 8 and ended up with just 1 run to show for it and it took Abreu tripling ahead of them to get that!

Hunter Pence- 1 for 4, HR(12).  BA= .285.  It's always a good game if you hit a HR, but the solo shot did not help much in this one.

Matt Cain- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.54.  What happened to Cainer's vaunted ability to keep the ball in the park?  It was still a QS and should have been good enough if the offense and bullpen had done their job.

Jake Dunning- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 3/1.  ERA= 3.60.  Dunning is pitching up to his AAA numbers.  He's a guy who can go more than 1 inning at a time too.

Jean Machi- 0.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.86.  Wow!  Machi sure went from being the go-to guy to hitting the wall in a hurry!  Lost confidence?  Worked too hard?  Bochy seems so desperate for some consistency in the bullpen that when he finds a hot hand, he rides it until it drops.  Right now, it looks like Machi might be the odd man out when Casilla comes back.

With the Loss, the Giants remained in 2'nd place, 3 games behind the D'Backs who lost to the Reds 4-2.  The Rockies beat the Nationals 7-6 to tie the Giants for second place.  The Padres lost to the Last Place Dodgers(man, I sure love writing that), 3-1 and are in 4'th place, 3.5 games behind the leaders while the Dodgers bring up the rear of the pack at 8.5 games behind.

The Giants now travel to LA to take on the Last Place Dodgers with Madison Bumgarner facing Hyun-Jin Ryu in game 1 tomorrow night.

  1. Not hard to be a humbled Giants fan right now...just thank god we don't play the Marlins and the Jays all the time.

Got to stay steady, wait this out, and then crush the Bums

  2. I am just as frustrated about this game as the next guy, but lets also realize that Eovaldi was dealing today. The complaints about the G's are legit, but the every once in a while, it isn't us, but them that causes the embarrassment, and today was kinda one of those days. Cain's 3 runs were all they needed today. The ninth hurt, but it really didn't matter.

    1. It can be a challenge to differentiate between good pitching and bad hitting.

  3. The Giants were clearly outplayed in this series. Maybe all the injuries are catching up to them right now, hopefully Panda gives them a boost against the Bums. Its all good if they can sweep the Bums! I think we're starting to see the effects of a tired bullpen due to the starters struggling to go deep into games early in the season. Maybe the frequent use caught with Kontos before he was sent down, wonder if Machi is experiencing the same issue.

I know the Marlins are in last place, but I like the young pitching they throw at you. We all know how good Eovaldi and Turner looked this weekend, but the Giants didn't see their best young pitcher Jose Fernandez. I also read the Tigers scouted this series because they are interested in acquiring Cieshak and Ryan Webb for their bullpen. Although the Dbacks took 2 out of 3 games against the Fish before coming to SF, the DBACKS scored only 8 runs in the 3 game series.

    GO GIANTS! Beat the Bums!

    1. Yeah, not that I think Jeffery Loria is a great guy or anything, but I think the Marlins are already starting to show why, from a baseball standpoint, that firesale was a smart move. Hey, they tried to jumpstart a contending team for the new stadium and it didn't work out. It was obvious it was never going to work out. I admire them for refusing to throw good money after bad, getting out from under all those bad contracts and starting over with a solid longterm plan.

    2. so doc, you really think that the marlins just happened to hit their stride when they got to att?

you really think that the team that is on the field can be built into a contender?

maybe its just that the giants sucked the entire series and the marlins will return to their losing ways

that is not a good team with a bright future...despite some pitching

that is a very bad team that is being used to launder money from whatever criminal enterprise loria is actually running

pop quiz...who is the gm of the fish?

    3. Loria was a smart guy, baseball is a business and Loria is a heck of a businessman. Instead of sticking with those huge contract guys who were underperforming he traded them and started all over again. Better to have a bad team with a low payroll than with a big one.

Look at the Red Sox, they're way better off than they were with Beckett, Gonzalez and Crawford.

Btw, what are those guys doing with the Jays (practically nothing).

    4. loria is a crook who talked miami into giving him a sweetheart deal by lying to them

      that isnt good business

      have you seen their attendance?

second year in a brand new ballpark...but he doesnt care, he didnt pay for it

he lied to the fans, the players and mlb

and the bosox are winning...the fish are not

  4. We used to get shut down pitching (not a technical term) two or three games out of 5.

Now we hope to get average, decent pitching out of our starters more than once in a week.

And there is not much cheap starting pitching help to look forward to from within either.

Sabean has always been right - you start with pitching.
