Down on the Farm: 6/24/2013

AAA  Tacoma Rainiers obliterated the Fresno Grizzlies 14-4:

Johnny Monell(DH)- 1 for 4, HR(14).  BA= .317.
Brett Pill(1B)- 1 for 4, HR(12).  BA= .346.
Cole Gillespie(2B)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .280.
Gary Brown(CF)- 0 for 3, BB, SB(10), Assist(3B).   BA= .241.
Fabio Castillo(RHP)- 4 IP, 10 H, 10 R, 4 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 9.00.
Tyler LaTorre(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

I don't know how many Assists Brown has on the season, but I see them listed fairly often.  Castillo seems to be going rapidly backward.  Maybe LaTorre should convert to pitching full time.  He was the only Grizzlies pitcher out of 4 who did not allow a run.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels dominated the Bowie Baysox 8-0:

Javier Herrera(DH)- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .309.
Joe Panik(2B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .258.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .272.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 2 for 3, BB, SB(8).  BA= .234.
Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 5.61.

This might be Taylor Rogers' best game as a pro.

High A  Modesto Nuts no-no'd the San Jose Giants 2-0:

Ty Blach(LHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.67.

Obviously no offensive key lines here.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats 3-2:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 3 for 4.  BA= .276.
Matt Duffy(SS)- 2 for 4.  BA= .305.
Joe Biagini(RHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 13/2.  ERA= 3.53.
Jorge Bucardo(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.90.
Tyler Mizenko(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(17).  ERA= 0.56.

Biagini has an ERA of 1.81 over his last 6 starts.  His K and BB numbers have improved considerably and he keeps the ball on the ground bit time.  This guy is moving WAY up the Giants prospect rankings!

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes blanked the Vancouver Canadians 1-0:

Brandon Bednar(SS)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .267.
Jonathan Jones(1B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .282.
Chris Johnson(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.50.
Jake Shadle(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.23.
Raymundo Montero(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.05.

Rookie AZL  Giants were idle.

DSL  Giants out hit the D'Backs 9-8:

Jean Angomas(RF)- 3 for 5.  BA= .258.
Gustavo Cabrera(CF)- 1 for 4, BB, Assist(Home).  BA= .188.
Nathanael Javier(3B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .211.

Again, not sure how many assists Gustavo has on the season, but I see the listed frequently.

  1. Brown has 11 assists in the season so far, wow, that's major. In 75 games. Good memory DrB! (Though I guess that goes with the job :^)

Gustavo has 3 assists in 19 games. That's 12 assists in 76 games rate, much like Brown.

Brown looks like he's sliding back into his prior poor batting discipline, he now has strikeouts in 8 straight games, 13 K's in 36 AB, horrible 64% contact rate.

The good news is all his homers and XBH (3 doubles and 3 homers) and, more importantly, 2 successful steals in 2 attempts. The extra base hits is the only way he can be offensively productive while striking out so much. Oh, and he actually has 4 walks too, which is good for him, good generally, at 10% of PA (40).

The batting line is that of a three true types masher, not the skinny beanpole that he is. He can strike out like this if he hits for power, but unless this is his new skill level and not random luck, not sustainable.

I still believe in him, but Baggerly is speculating maybe him and Hembree in trade for Nolasco. I don't see how a trade for Nolasco don't also include a starting pitcher like Kickham or Heston in the deal, more probably Kickham. It will be really interesting who we trade, the rumors are swirling that the Giants are first in line to get him, which appears to be the Giants covering for the fact that Lincecum and Zito could potentially be gone for 2014, plus we don't know about Vogelsong.

Apparently Nolasco is a Bay Area native, loved the Giants growing up, and presumable open to a longer term deal. In any case, he's also controlled this season and next, if I remember all this right.

    1. Say, do you think Villalona has reestablished his prospect status good enough to be a trading chip? Not that I know whether or not he's on the Giants "Do Not Trade" list or not, but thinking more in the 2014 timeframe, if he's reestablished as a Top 50 prospect by next season, would he and a few other Giants Top 10 prospects be enough to get a Stanton from the Marlins? Hard to trade away good power like that, but then they traded Joseph away last season, so I really don't know who is on that list and who is not, as I would have thought he was on that list.

However, he has not hit that well the past couple of weeks, so I'm probably being premature in thinking about this. He hasn't hit a homer in three weeks, so maybe the league has readjusted to him (or maybe he got homer happy and lost his stroke).

Or maybe the homerun spirit that was in him moved to Gary Brown? :^D

  2. The report on traderumors today says the Marlins are looking to move Nolasco ASAP... I would welcome him if it happened. Looks like Baggs also pondered the Marlins tossing in Stanton, but I seriously doubt that. If they were serious about moving his bat, there are other teams who could offer them much more than we can (not that I don't respect the Giants farm system, but we don't have too many A-level prospects right now). I wouldn't be too upset about moving Brown, but I would like to get a look at Heath Hembree before we send him packing. I think Villalona has re-established himself in the Giants top 20 or so, but I don't think he'll be noticed on the big stage unless he goes on an absolute tear in the 2nd half. I think he's worth hanging onto for a while while he matures.

  3. re: Hembree.. Maybe the Giants feel Josh Osich is getting closer and has more potential?

    1. Sabean's interview made it even more stark: said Hembree don't have any secondary pitches and thus he is not ready. Seems like he's turning out to be more like Runzler, unable to make that final leap up. Hope he can still do it, and fireballers have some utility in the majors, but it's been a couple of years now and he's still not figuring it out, so hope for me is fading.

    2. If they want Hembree to develop secondary pitches, they need to get him off that darn closer, 1 inning per game, track he is on. He needs to get 2-3 innings per appearance or maybe even start for awhile so he faces more batters and learns different ways to get them out.
