  1. I thought Monell was the best hitter there going in. He's a bit long in the tooth.

    1. Monell could always hit. The question is whether he can field a position.

    1. Thanks for the link. That article makes a lot of sense now why he was set up in San Jose, the Musgraves gives him a nice cocoon of familiarity and comfort as he adjusts back to professional baseball life and allows him to think more about playing ball than other issues, had he had to return to Augusta, since she still believes in him.

Plus, he's nearby for the Giants top brass to view and make their own assessment of where he is developmentally. For, as noted in the article by a scout or something like that (instructor?), if he can make it to the big show by 25, he can still have a nice career.

This is the first article - kudos to Pavlovic for finding that professor - to interview someone with a knowledgeable perspective of the crime and the region, and to say that this situation is not much different from U.S. courts where the rich has the advantage. We'll never know if it was cold-blooded murder or a big time blackmailing, naming the only wealthy individual in the group, but I don't think that will stop people from bringing this up to the day he retires from professional baseball.

If the Giants are known for anything Moneyball-ish, it is for accepting that talent comes in packages big (Sandoval, Villalona) and small (Lincecum) and not letting the outside of the book prevent them from enjoying the inside.

  3. The article in the Fresno Bee about the Grizzlie game last night stated that the Giants have asked Hembree to start using his off speed pitches more often instead of relying soley on his fastball to get AAA hitters out. It mentioned that he did so last night and that is part of the reason he was lit up. It would seem that if they want him to work on his off speed stuff, perhaps they should move him to a position where is pitching multiple innings and continue to encourage the development of an off speed arsenal. 1. I agree. Closer is not the situation where you work on secondary pitches. That's part of the reason why I hate the "closer track" in the minors.

    2. Gotta say, it sounds like the Giants player development folks might have been asleep at the wheel if they are just now asking Hembree to work on secondary pitches.

    3. I agree with DrB to a great extent here about Hembree.

The only caution I would throw out in that regard is that perhaps they thought that he could survive by just throwing heat in the majors, but miscalculated, and he's not been able to corral his heat enough to throw with command, so now they feel the need to get him to learn another pitch.

But yeah, closer is not the ideal situation to throw him out there with new pitches, it would be better to do like Runzler and run him 2+ innings. Maybe they don't want to crush his self-esteem that much by moving him off closer?
