Down on the Farm: 5/8/2013

AAA  Nashville Sounds downed the Fresno Grizzlies 5-2:

Kensuke Tanaka(2B)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(7).  BA= .357.
Juan Perez(RF)- 1 for 4, 3B.  BA= .287.
Gary Brown(CF)- 0 for 3, BB, PO/CS(4).  BA= .201.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 6.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.65.

The CS bug bites Brownie again.  Strong effort by Kickham who has 40 K's against 14 BB in 36.2 IP on the season with a GO/AO= 1.92.  Those are darn good peripheral numbers that would appear to indicate he has pitched  much better than his 0-4 W-L and 5.65 ERA would indicate.

AA  Bowie Baysox vs Richmond Flying Squirrels rained out for the second day in a row.  Man, that east coast is brutal for baseball in the spring!

High A  San Jose Giants smacked down the Bakersfield Blaze 6-1:

Chris Lofton(CF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, Sac.  BA= .260.
Myles Schroder(3B)- 1 for 4, HR(3), BB.  BA= .300.
Mac Williamson(DH)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .256.
Elliott Blair(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .225.
Shawn Payne(DH)- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SB(7).  BA= .252.
Ty Blach(LHP)- 5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.87.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.00.

Have I mentioned that I really like Myles Schroder a lot?  Elliott Blair is another guy who I think might be a legit sleeper.  Angel V not in the lineup, so I assume he came out of yesterday's game with some sort of injury?  Is Ty Blach the darkhorse of the 2012 draft?  5'th round out of Creighton.  His pick did not impress many draft watchers, but he's a level ahead of Stratton and Agosta and pitching great.  24 K's against just 3 BB's in 33.2 IP, with a GO/AO= 1.67.  The K rate is not too impressive, but he doesn't walk anybody and keeps the ball on the ground.  A kid to watch going forward.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets were idle.

  1. Ty Blach just throw strikes. And win ballgames. After I'm done wiping the egg off my face I'll go check how Lamb and Perkins are doing.

Hey, I'm always acknowledging this is armchair stuff, and John Barr has been in this business for many years. And that we're lucky to have him.

Saw this on Sickels site: http://conorglassey.com/wannabe-scouts-show-some-respect/

I guess the gist of it is Conor Glassey is mad as hell about the interwebz and he's not going to take it anymore! My guess is he's directing that to the crew at Fangraphs and Bullpen Banter. While I agree with some of what he says, the fact is these guys are providing free content that cuts into BA's pie. So you have to listen to a little droning on sometimes, but if you keep an open mind... Although I do think those F/G guys come off like they are wannabe scouts. Particularly Newman. Like we've said, the point of scouting is to go find the jewel in the rough, not give updates on top 10 prospects...

I like your call on Myles Schroder. But, but he's OLD for the level. Don't care. Not one bit.

  2. Between old and doing a good job and young but not putting up much, it's wrong to take the former lightly.

Who will be this year's Bo Gentry?

  3. Anyone know any updates on Eric Surkamp?

    1. I think I read just the other day that Surkamp is ready to start ramping up. Projected start of pitching in games: Midseason.
