High A  Rancho Cucamonga Quakes beat the San Jose Giants 8-3:

Angel Villalona(1B)- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .213.
Jeff Arnold(C)- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .265.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 5/1.  ERA= 4.39.

I attended this game. It was a near-sellout and I got a seat way down the RF line in the bleachers overlooking the Giants bullpen.  I couldn't tell too much about Blackburn's stuff.  He sat 91-93 MPH with the FB on the stadium gun.  He also had a couple of different offspeed pitches that registered 76 and 81 MPH.  I could see some vertical movement and the offspeed stuff seemed to break sharply downward.  Not sure why he got hit so hard, but most of the hits were scalded.  Angel V again looked terrific.  One of his outs was a hard line drive right at the second baseman in the second inning.  I continue to be impressed with Angel V's bat.  I thought he looked a tad lighter tonight than a few weeks ago in San Berdoo.

Low A  Savannah Sand Gnats stung the Augusta Greenjackets 3-1:

Eric Sim(C)- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA- .240.
Matthew Lujan(LHP)_ 3.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.45.
Derek Law(RHP)- 3.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.57.

  1. Great to hear about AnVil!

Sad to hear about Blackburn... But that is more velocity than the people who did not like him said he had, which is encouraging to me. And pitchers will have bad outings at some point.

    1. Agreed. IMO, if you are looking at long term prognosis, the velocity is the most important factor and 91-93 is a lot better than I was afraid I was going to see.
