Game Wrap: D'Backs 6 Giants 2

The Giants played like a team that's running on an empty gas tank last night.  The D'Backs scored 6 runs before the Giants got their first hit in the 7'th inning.  Key Lines:

Marco Scutaro- 2 for 4.  BA= .288.  A day at the office for Scooter.

Brandon Belt- 1 for 3.  BA= .275.  Belt drove in 2 runs with his hit.  See, if you do it long enough, the BA with runners on base should end up about the same as without.

Madison Bumgarner- 6.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.15.  Bumgarner took a QS into the 7'th.

Trevor Cahill- 6.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.98.  Cahill is a decent pitcher, but he should not be taking no-hitters into the 7'th inning against good hitting teams, which the Giants have become.  It did seem like maybe Cahill might have been helped by some generous strike calls on sliders down and off the plate.

The Dodgers lost out on another chance to gain ground on the Giants losing to the Pesky Padres 4-3.  The Dodgers remain 4.5 games behind the NL West leading San Francisco Giants.  The D'Backs gained ground to 9.5 games off the pace.

The Giants get a badly needed day off before starting a huge 3 game series against the Dodgers in AT&T Park.  Tim Lincecum faces Josh Beckett in game on Friday night.  Giants can probably put this thing away by winning at least 2 of 3 in the series.  The one thing they cannot let happen is a Dodgers sweep.

  1. It seems like a while since we last saw a 3-2, 2-1 or 1-0 game.

  2. Beckett-Lincecum Friday
    Cain-Capuano Saturday
    Blanton-Zito Sunday

Beckett had a solid previous start. Capuano's performance has been sliding downhill in the 2nd half. Traditionally, Capuano's ERA is more than a run higher in the 2nd half vs. the 1st half.

Will the Dodgers be tempted to bump up Kershaw for Sunday? Kershaw last pitched on the 4th, so he could pitch on the 9th with full rest. The Dodgers do have the 10th off.

It might not be worth it to them to mess up the rotation, as they have a pretty tough schedule after the Giants. 2 D-Backs, 4 Cards, 3 Nats, 3 Reds.

Are there any circumstances where the Giants would mess with their rotation for a better Sunday matchup? Losing the first two games, for instance. (Skip Zito, insert Vogelsong) Aside from a couple of April starts, Giants rotation has been clockwork. I'm guessing Bochy doesn't mess with it, regardless. Even if it means a Kershaw-Zito.

If the Giants do well this weekend, the Dodgers probably have to start eyeballing the Wild Card. The playoffs, if the Giants make it, are going to be tough. We do not have the pen we had in '10. Last night it showed. A little distance would do a world of good for our pitchers.

    2. I saw that hit and I don't know why they even allowed him to walk off the field on his own power, don't take a risk, bring the stretcher out or something. You just don't know what's wrong, even if he seems capable of getting up on his own and walking on his own.

    3. Classic natural history of an epidural hematoma: 1. Blow to the temple or side of head. 2. Immediate brief loss of consciousness. 3. Lucid period where everything seems to be OK. 4. Patient lapses back into coma and dies without surgical intervention.

The most common injury is a fractured temporal bone that lacerates the middle menigeal artery.

    4. There have now been enough of these incidents that I believe pitchers should be required to wear some type of helmet device on the mound.
