Down on the Farm 7/8/2012

AAA   Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Sacramento River Cats 8-6:

Nick Noonan(SS)- 2 for 4, 2 HR(5), BB.  BA= .297.
Chris Dominguez(LF)- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .219
Jackson Williams(C)- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .270.

Noonan is having an intriguing season.  The BA is so-so for the PCL but he has pretty decent walk and K numbers to go with it.  He's also increased his value and chances by playing multiple positions.  Free Jackson Williams!

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels downed the Reading Phillies 7-2:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 5.  BA= .278.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 3 for 5, 3B, SB(11).  BA= .214.
Nick Liles(RF)- 3 for 4.  BA= .282.
Johnny Monell(C)- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(7).  BA= .215.
Chris Gloor(LHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.25.

Brown has an 8 game hit streak in which he has 6 multi-hit games.  Adrianza is hitting .317/.364/.585 over his last 10 games. Liles is hitting .395 over his last 10.  I consider Gloor to be a significant sleeper.

High A  Rancho Cucamonga topped the San Jose Giants 4-1:

Dan Burkhart(C)- 1 for 3, HR(2).  BA= .286.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.18.

Low A  Asheville Tourists edged the Augusta Greenjackets 3-2 in 10 innings:

Jose Flores(1B)- 2 for 4, HR(2), SB(2).  BA= .252.
Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(31).  BA= .304.
Brett Krill(RF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .260.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.70.

Payne has been consistently good all season.  After a slow start to the season, Krill hit .309 in June and is hitting .400 over his last 10 games.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes exploded for a 17-2 win over the Eugene Emeralds:

Matt Duffy(SS)- 0 for 3, 2 BB, HBP.  BA= .258.
Mike Merganthaler(DH)- 3 for 6, 2B.  BA= .263.
Charles Jones(CF)- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .228.
Joseph Rapp(1B)- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(5), BB.  BA= .272.
Stephen Yarrow(3B)- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB.  BA= .190
Rafael Rodriguez(LF)- 1 for 3, HBP, SB(5).  BA= .267.
Sam Eberle(C-3B)- 2 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .278.
Stephen Branca(2B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .214.
Kendry Flores(RHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.38.
Steven Okert(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.
Ian Gardeck(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.24.

Fun game to buff up those stat lines.  Jones has a 4 game hit streak with 3 doubles and a HR.

Rookie AZL  Giants were idle.

DSL  Giants were idle.

Futures Game:  Tommy Joseph was the only participant for the Giants.  He had a walk and double off the RF wall in 2 PA's.  I tuned into the game just in time to see him make a nice block and retrieval of a pitch in the dirt from Dylan Bundy.  The runner on 2B tried to take 3B but Tommy gunned him down with a quick, strong and accurate throw.  I'm pretty sure Tommy Joseph's stock went up with his performance in this game.

  1. Doc, do you have a good understanding if the Rule V eligibility? What constitutes a "year"? If I understand it accurately, I expect Dominguez, Noonan, Gloor, Cavan and Heston to have to be added to the 40 between now and the draft. Do you concur?

    1. The clock starts on Rule 5 the year the player is drafted. I haven't taken the time to check on service time for all these prospects, but my sense is yes, the Giants have a lot of players who will become eligible and a lot of very tough decisions re. who to protect.

Out of that bunch, I would think they might need/want to protect everybody but possibly Cavan.

  2. Tommy John was the only individual for the Leaders. He had a move and dual off the RF walls in 2 PA's. I updated into the experience just in time to see him create a awesome prevent and collection of a message in the dust from Dylan Bundy.

    3. I think this is some paraphrase Star Wars language or something. I though long and hard about deleting it, but decided it wasn't causing any harm so left it in for laughs.

    1. So the only significant draft choice still unsigned is Tella at #11. I'm guessing he goes back to school, but you never know. What, 5 more days to get it done?
