Down on the Farm: 7/30/2012

It was a quiet night on the Farm as several teams and leagues had the day off.

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies vs Colorado Springs Skysox suspended after 2 innings with no score.

AA  EL had the night off.

High A  San Jose Giants were idle.

Low A  Rome Braves blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 6-0:  nothing to see here.  'Jackets managed just 3 hits. Neff pitched a scoreless inning out of the pen.

Short Season  NWL was idle.

Rookie AZL  D'Backs topped the Giants 5-4:

Tyler Hollick(CF)- 0 for 2, 3 BB, 2 SB(7).  BA= .361.
Hector Mercedes(RF)- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .273.
Jonathan Jones(1B)- 1 for 3, HR(4).  BA= .280.
Shilo McCall(DH)- 2 for 4.  BA= .273.
Matt Lujan(LHP0- 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.14.
Emmanuel DeJesus(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.29.

Hey, Hollick takes walks and steals bases!  What a concept!  Speaking of concepts, Jonathan Jones is showing rare power for a Giants prospect even if it's in the AZL.  DeJesus has had encouraging results in limited action after being lights out in the DSL last year.

DSL  Pirates blanked the Giants 3-0:

Luis Pino(RHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 0.69.

Pino is a smallish 17 yo RHP out of Mexico who now has 14 K's against 4 BB's in 13 IP in 3 appearances so far.

  1. We got him!!! Tommy Joseph, Nate Schierholtz, and Seth Rosin for Pence. Not bad, wish we hadn't given up Joseph, though.

    1. Fair deal....We knowwhat we are getting in Pence....OTOH, I love JOSEPH and he WAS in my TOP 5, he really had no p[lace in SF for the next 3-4 years at least..Ditto with the underwheliming and underpefroming St. Nate who, alongwith his mouth, needed to be gone...I know ROSIN is one of DR.B's faves, but nothing very special about him and the type of players always put in these types of trade...In retunr, Pence and Cabrera as your starting LF and RF ain't bad...Too bad we can't get a 1B....Brandon Belt better rocket off with this chance...He needs to...

    2. I like Pence a lot. I advocated for giving up more to get him last year instead of Beltran. The Giants control his contract next year too, but it will be expensive, about $14 M or so.

Nate is Nate. I think we know what we're giving up with him and Pence is a definite upgrade. I like Joseph's power potential but the Giants have depth at that position. I also like Rosin but he's definitely a second tier prospect at best.

      Good, fair deal.

    3. deal had to be done. gonna miss nate, but he will thrive in philly...sure bet to get resigned

rosin will be a good back end or pen guy

joseph is what made the deal....really hope susac now steps up...and if belt doesnt turn it around, losing joseph does loom large

    4. I hope you are right about Nate in Philly, for Nate's sake, but I really doubt he's ever going to be more than what we saw in SF, a fringy 4'th OF.

  2. I don't like the Pence deal I felt that we could have gotten more for Joseph and Pence has not been that good this year anyway.

    1. More for Joseph than Pence? Man, I really don't think so. I think Joseph has great upside, but he's hardly an elite prospect. He has an outside chance of making BA's offseason Top 100 Prospects at best.

    2. Joseph was #100 pre-season and then got bumped for Yu Darvish. He has held his own but not excelled in the Eastern, and the new crop of hype the draft brings will keep him around the same slot I imagine. Still, he's young and was one of our best power prospects at a premium position, it does hurt a bit.

  3. If Pence hasn't been very good this year then what does it say about the Giants when he steps in and is immediately the team leader in HR and RBI's? Pence is going to be a good addition even with the high K rates and streaky play. He has good energy and attitude and should light a fire under some butts much like he did last year for the Phillies. Joseph will end up like every other Giants offensive prospect, the punchline to a bad joke. One thing you can count on is that there isn't a single player in our farm system that isn't worth trading to upgrade the big league club. None of them should be untouchable and expectations should be zero for every Giants prospect that doesn't pitch for a living.

    1. Pence defense has been down this year plus he has been hitting in a hitter friendly park. If this is a rental which it could be because he is gonna make 14 million + next year then it is bad. If it is more than a rental than its better just seems like the deal was forced as a response to the dodgers. Plus if it is more than a rental is this an admission that we are going to lose Melky? That would be 30 million probably in the corner outfield spots with 60 million in the rotation and 5 million at 3rd base. Your talking about 95 million for 6 players plus Buster's arbitration is coming up soon and will need to fix the bullpen.

    2. Pato, you are the most negative poster I have seen since Tito Mac on SFGiants, Disney and Extra Baggs. Why are you a fan of a team that you have such a low opinion about?

    3. Being a fan doesnt mean you have to agree with every decision your teams management makes. I have been positive when I agree with their moves but there have been a ton of bad moves that piss me off as well.

    4. Not saying you never make good points, Pato, but your tone is ALWAYS overwhelmingly negative, and virulently so. You really should listen to yourself occasionally.

  4. My two cents on Pence: good trade. Notice that not only another year of control (at significant cost, yes) but also chance at draft pick comp if he leaves. Gives Gints leverage in Melky negotiations and a back up plan. If everything breaks right, you have Pence (29 to start 2013) and Melky (28 to start 2013). 4 or 5 year deals could lock in good value/risk and will be interesting to watch. Pagan is swooning a bit so who knows about his draft pick comp potential right now, but he might have another hot streak in him. Blanco or Gary Brown in CF looks nice.

Pence brings energy to the club at the right time. Sort of a free swinger, and definitely unorthodox. I like him. Defense isn't great. Would hope he'd move to LF. He does have a nice arm though. Giving up Joseph hurts, but at least we have depth. Rosin is a nice shot at a hard throwing pen arm but not that big a deal, and NTG wouldn't get PT anyways. Good job making the moneys work Sabes, and KPIX was the truth! Wonder if Sabes himself was the leak... Apparently Philly appoached weeks ago about letting go of Pence. Even a drunken sailor runs up against the luxury tax I guess.
