Game Wrap 6/2/2012: Giants 2 Cubs 1

The Giants offense managed just 7 baserunners in the game, but bunched 4 of them in a 2 run sixth inning.  Matt Cain and the bullpen limited the Cubs to 1 run for the win.  Key Lines:

Matt Cain- 8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.62.  Cain got his 6'th win of the season against 2 losses to run his career W-L record to .500, 75-75.  It's difficult to quantify, but when you look at the IP and ERA over the years, it should be closer to 100-50 in his age 27 season and on a solid pace for a HOF career.  As it is, he probably has an outside shot.  I do think HOF voters will have to adjust their criteria over then next decade or two with less emphasis on W-L, although we all know the sabermetric types don't think much of Matt Cain either.  Anyway, I think what I'm trying to say is Matt Cain is probably about 1/3 of the way through his career with the possibility that he's just entering the peak third.  He's already done some remarkable things despite possibly the worst run support ever.

The Giants upped their season record to 5 games over .500 for the first time.  The Dodgers won so the Giants remain 4 games behind the NL West leaders.

Barry Zito takes the mound in game 3 of the series against lefty Travis Wood who would seem to be the weakest of the 4 pitchers the Giants face this series.

Disquieting news about Pablo Sandoval who is being accused of sexual assault.  These stories are minefields in terms of expressing any opinion about them.  I'll just say that a complaint of this nature that starts with "I was too drunk to give consent" has to be somewhat dubious to begin with.  I hope it all turns out to be nothing, but I would hope Pablo learns from this that ballplayers with $ multi-million contacts are targets, and be more circumspect in his actions.

  1. Cain is sporting a K/BB ratio of 4.87 on the year! That's double his career average! Taken the bump 11 times and delivered a QS every time I'm pretty sure, although there might have been one game he let in a couple extra. The 6-2 record will get the attention of traditionalists, and alls I have to say about that is bring it on. I think he's in the Cy Young discussion this year. His WHIP is below 1.00, his ERA is at 2.62.

Total rock. Consistent as hell. This is why I was jumping up and down and getting anstsy with the contract extension process. You get a guy who is a horse, and is consistent, you hang on for dear life. Anchor of our staff, de-facto captain, absolute Tennessee Stud.

Come on Zito, show up, keep the ball down and pitch to contact. It'd be nice to go on a run now, there are some nice signs of break out.

  2. Giants Torture continues...but in a good way!

Cubs Torture continues...but only in a Cubs way.

Giants should wear their old school jerseys every time Cain pitches. Beautiful to see Cain get his record to .500 - and he said he didn't even know he had?! Just doing his job, that's old school.

Giants are roll'n and Zito needs to keep it going. Melky time today.
