Down on the Farm: 5/31/2012

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies edged the Sacramento River Cats 2-1:

Justin Christian(CF)- 4 for 4.  BA= .380.
Francisco Peguero(RF)- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .224.
Chris Dominguez(DH)- 1 for 4.  BA= .250.
Nick Noonan(SS)- 2 for 4.  BA= .315.
Yusmeiro Petit(RHP)- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.52.
George Kontos(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.82.

Chris Dominguez makes his AAA debut.  Didn't see that coming.  Probably because Roger K hurt his shoulder crashing into a wall and is on the DL.  MRI results pending.  That's 3 dominant starts in a row for Petit.

AA  Altoona Curve topped the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-4 in 11 innings.

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 5, HR(1), Sac, SB(15).  BA= .245.
Tommy Joseph(C)- 4 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .279.
Johnny Monell(1B)- 1 for 2, BB, SF.  BA= .225.
Tom Vessella(LHP)- 3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.25.

Brown hits his first dinger of the year.  The thing I've been most impressed with Joseph is his ability to hit for average.  That tells me his power has a better chance of translating to the majors. Not sure if he passes the ugly GF test though.  Hey, maybe someone should to an ugly GF study and submit the results to Fangraphs!  Vessella has been pitching a lot better of late.  I believe this was his best outing since coming into the organization.  There's always a place for a LHP who can get hitters out.

High A  Bakersfield Blaze downed the San Jose Giants 7-4 in 12 innings:

Joe Panik(SS)- 1 for 5, HR(1), BB.  BA= .261.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 6, HR(11).  BA= .280.
Dan Burkhart(C)- 2 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .241.
Ryan Bradley(LHP)- 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.41.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 4.35.
Phil McCormick(LHP)- 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.68.
Edward Concepcion(RHP)- 0.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 8.10.

Panik hits his first dinger for SJ.  Bradley gets back on track after a couple of rough starts.  Tough night for the flamethrowers, Rosin and Concepcion.

Low A  Asheville Tourists pummeled the Augusta Greenjackets 11-3:

Kyle Crick(RHP)- 4.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.05.
Demondre Arnold(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.29.

It looks like Crick was doing OK until the 5'th inning when the wheels came off.

  1. Who's the better prospect Crick or Blackburn? I've really liked what Blackburn is doing but don't know if his stuff (he's more of mixing pitches than overpowering) will transfer to higher levels better than Crick. He does have one thing in his favor, which is plus command. Duvall has really impressed me, though he was a one-dimensional player but the guy has got a serious hit tool much better than Dominguez. Just don't know if he's highly rated by the giants staff.

My perfect giants drat for Monday would be

    20. Joey Gallo
    84. Trey Williams
    115. Martin Agosta

I don't think you'll have to go overslot for Gallo or Agosta so they can go for Trey. Then draft a bunch of college relievers like DrB suggested.

By the way, DrB, have you got any news on why Josh Osich, Chuckie Jones and Bryce Bandilla haven't been playing??

    2. Oh yeah, right now I think you'd have to rank Blackburn as the better prospect between him and Crick. He may not have Crick's velocity, but I believe there are studies that show early command is an important predictor of future success and it's not like Blackburn hasn't been missing bats.

  3. My ideal draft would be:
    1st round: T Hensley/L McCullers/V Roache
    2nd Round: D Underwood/A Bregman/H Virant
    3rd Round: Ron Miller/Adam Brett Walker/Diekroger

Player I would rather not have: Piscotty And Marrero

good article on the wheeler trade

gonna hold sabean to being able to develop another wheeler

giants have a ton of backend guys right now...no true front end

  5. Dr. B. are any of our AA prospects meeting expectations this year? I have the impression that our top prospects, throughout the system, and particularly at AA, are so far really disappointing. Am I wrong? Love your blog and insight - and dedication to the prospects.

    1. Yeah, I think Tommy Joseph is doing well in AA. Brown has been disappointing, but it's still fairly early and he has time to heat up. Heston has really emerged as a prospect in Richmond and Brett Bochy has been lights out in the bullpen.

Overall, I'd give the AA prospects a C so far.

  6. Love Melky for Durty

Kontos for Stewart is looking pretty good

Petit for nothing might be even better

For all the weakness in our MiLB ranks right now: Brown, Pegs, Panik, Wheeler gone, etc...

The dumpster dives/IFA's are looking really good. Think of the Giants w/o Voggie, Hensley, Arias, Blanco, Pablo, Sanchez. Dumpster Ball! "It may be ugly GF, but W's are what counts"

  7. Giants should have signed DeRosa's GF, not DeRosa. I am sure her wrist was in better shape.

  8. Bradley really struggled early, but then dominated the last four innings. Dunno what was goin on with Rosin cuz this was an unordinary horrendous outing. It was shocking that Concepcion actually got us out of a lead-run at 3rd, 1 out situation in the 11th, but then he turned back into his normal self in the 12th. =[
