Hot Tip: Mock Draft on Minor League Ball

Good luck to Shankbone as he represents for Giants fans over on the Minor League Ball draft.  Starts at 10 AM PDT.  Check it out.  Oh, and here's my suggested draft board for pick #20, Shank:

1.  Richie Shaffer
2.  Ty Hensley
3.  Zach Eflin/Nick Traveiso/ Lucas Sims/Walker Weickel.

I think I've come to the conclusion that Richie Shaffer is THE impact college hitter in the draft.  If he's there, take him. If not, go with one of the HS RHP's.

  1. Cheers, DrB. We've been going back and forth in the prep about Shaffer. I like him more than most. I think the A's mock will snag him, so it won't come up.

I also like Ty Hensley more than most, and am fighting the good fight on that front.

My dark horse is Addison Russell, but I'm not getting any consensus. There's a lot of talk about Stryker Trahan, Corey Seager and Carson Kelly making late runs. I like Russell more than the other guys, because he has a shot at sticking at Short, and is a legit plus power potential bat.

Sims is my pick out of those other RH HS pitchers, the FLA preps are all good. I'm trying to be fair with Smoral, but nobody wants to pick up that ball and run with it. He is moving up a lot of mocks, I've noticed.

Roache having his arm injury comped to Cliff Floyd has me spooked on that front. The consensus among the guys participating is don't do as the Giants might, and most likely a HS bat will be chosen. I'd put that at slim odds in real life, but one can hope.

    1. I've been a reader of Minor League Ball since it's inception. I used to be a regular commenter until they went to SB Nation and I couldn't seem to figure out how to log in anymore. The guys over there know their stuff, but tend to get wild-eyed irrationally exuberant about HS bats. Just keep that in mind. Good luck with the draft.

  2. Ty Hensley is continuing to rise when others are falling or staying the same which this late in the game says something. Pure stuff..ability to dial it up to 98 and once his balance point is a little more solid he wil sit 93-96 and pop 98's regularly...very minor issue. You can't teach that curve, and the change is coming nicely. I don't think you are minority Shank, he just had farther to come this spring from where he was. He was a catcher most of his career. When you take that into account..Holy Cow. I read on twitter that 50 scouts including GM's were at his HS yesterday to watch a workout. Jim Calis has him at 18 to the Dodgers, Marlins have ties, Reds love him, and Bill Gievett of the Rockies was at his last start. I know beacuse I was there, my son plays for BA. If he falls to us heaven's sake grab him!

    1. Excellent. I've liked Hensley since the very beginning, and put the most Matt Cain of any pitcher in the draft comp on him.

    2. Yeah, I'm in love with Ty Hensley but am starting to think he'll be long gone by the time the Giants draft at #20. I saw one recent mock that had Shaffer and Hensley going #18 and 19. Arrgh!!!

    3. I agree on both Shaffer and Hensley. Trahan as an OF is interesting, as is Seager as a 3B. Roache scares me as well.

Somebody's mock (Mayo?) has us choosing Nick Travieso at #20. Any thoughts?

    4. I would rank Eflin, Traveiso, Sims and Weickel just a tick below Hensley but any of them would be very acceptable at #20.

  3. Here is something to consider as well, that video footage from the UA All American Game that BA is floating out there is from last summer and his mechanics are the reason he went into the season under-rated. He has been re vamped...he is getting into his back side and not falling off which is a major change, his body is completly different as well...look at video mid season from the outing that really got the brass talking in AZ (PG has it on You Tube)compare the two and you will be shocked..that's reason for the better velo and teams, the smart ones are noticing and that is why he is rising. Some people say the age thing is a big deal...stuff is still stuff and quite frankly the big 4 don't have his CB. Not that I am comparing the two but wasn't Beckett 19 when he was drafted? He is a different pitcher now...all of here in OK saw the transformation and it was the talk all Spring. Again he still has to solidify a few things but give me that apptitude any day.

    1. Guess I should say I am talking about Hensley here

    2. You got it. I have seen that PG footage and am about to go grab the link to post up in the war room. It is indeed impressive.

  4. And Shankbone makes the right choice and takes Hensley, although Fla-Giant, who knows what he is talking about made a strong case for Traveiso. Sounds like there was a lot of pressure to take Stratton, but I think Hensley is the right choice by a hair over Travieso.

    1. That was fun. I have had a few discussions about Hensley with Fla-Giant, so there is some history. I like him a ton, the age factor is the issue. I've gone to bat on Hensley in previous draft threads and updates on MCC, but there wasn't much on the actual war room thread. I respect his opinion greatly, I imagine he doesn't like the pick much, but lets see what happens. Ty is taking it up a notch.

Hensley is a horse. In addition to the velocity gains which are cranking him from the supplemental into the middle of the first round discussion, he also has this going for him: simplicity and the ability to be aggressive. The Giants like pitchers who locate their fastball and pitch strong. Two plus pitches, the change up will fill in.

Our board got snagged right in front, its pretty funny when that happens. I flirted with my dark horse Addison Russell, but decided to be realistic on the Giants end of it.

  6. Not sure if Shankbone is checking over here while he's in his war room over on Minor League Ball. If he's thinking hitter at #84, I suspect Ron Miller is signable for second round money. Ditto Trey Williams and Keon Broxton. I know he's in love with Alex Bregman, but I don't see Bregman as having the ceiling of the other 3. If he's thinking about signability and looking college hitters, I think Gelalich is the best bet although I'd be happy with Brandon Thomas too.

    My Board for pick 84:

    1. Trey Williams
    2. Ron Miller
    3. Keon Broxton
    4. Jeff Gelalich
    5. Alex Bregman
    6. Brandon Thomas
    7. Pitcher- Agosta? Farmer?

I actually would be happy for the Giants to go pitcher, pitcher, pitcher in real life.

    1. I actually had to bail for family stuff for a bit. Trey Williams got snagged, Fla-Giant and I liked Bregman a bit more than Miller or Keon, they snagged Bregman in the 2nd. I'd be pretty stoked for that in real life, and I think it might be realistic. 600K or so is the slot, he's a baseball rat, and has the potential at plus power at 2B with nice intangibles. I'll admit I like the scrappers a ton, it is one of my weaknesses.

I got back in time to participate in the third round, we were pretty much locked onto Sam Selman. 97 MPH lefty, wild as hell, Dick Tidrow project #1. Couldn't get consensus on Gelalich, he was popular in the room, he might have changed the conversation, but he got popped first thing in the 3rd.

I'd be pretty happy with Hensley, Bregman and Selman. Definitely fun, there were a few teams that went AWOL that mucked up the joint, but it was for the most part realistic. The Giants guys, myself included, decided to start heckling a bit when Chase de Jong and Cody Poteet were picked late in the third. Those guys are million dollar babies in my opinion.

  7. Shank just so you feel good going with your gut:

    Matt Cain:
As a senior at Houston High School in Germantown, TN in 2002, Matt Cain struck out 83 and allowed only 28 hits in 62 innings, winning Tennessee’s Gatorate High School Player of the Year award.

    Ty Hensley:
As a senior at Edmond Santa Fe HS in Edmond, OK in 2012, Ty Hensley struck out 111 and allowed 23 Hits in 55.1 innings..POY not determined yet but seeing as he hit .447 with 10 HR according to espn I would say he's got a pretty good shot.

Reading the banter between you and FL Giant I thought I would throw this at ya.

    1. As I said up above, we've had some fun banter before, so that was sort of the tip of the iceberg. He watches a ton of SEC ball, is very sharp on the process. I admit it was hard to stay strong with folks yelling for the college riser, but I made my draft board so I stuck with it. I really like Hensley, and I did from the first viewing. Didn't look at stats or birthdays, just watched a bunch of guys, then started in on the rankings. The fact he is rising so much, that made it easier, I'll admit that.

  8. I like what you did with the draft. I looked up some video of Bregman and liked what I saw. He's not the biggest guy in the world but has a strong swing and good balance at the plate. I noticed he hit 19 HR's in a HS season which is a ton. You don't have to be big to generate power at the plate. It's easy to forget that Willie Mays and Hank Aaron were no bigger than Bregman and they somehow managed to hit over 1400 HR's between them. My only question: Is he signable for late second round slot money?

The Selmon pick looks good too. Typical Giants project. BA mentioned that he might be a tough sign as he may decide to stay in school and try to raise his stock for next year's draft.

Nice job by you, Fla-Giant and the other dude(can't pronuounce his name).
