Game Wrap 5/6/2012: Giants 4 BrewCrew 3

It looked like another dominant performance by Matt Cain would come to naught as the Giants defense once again failed to make key plays in the 9'th inning to cause a Blown Save for Santiato Casilla.  The defense rallied to make some great plays in the top of the 11'th and Hector Sanchez delivered a walk-off hit to end it in the bottom of the 11'th.  Key Lines:

Gregor Blanco- 0 for 3, BB.  It doesn't look like much of a line, but Blanco led off the the bottom of the first with the Gaints already trailing by a run and scored when Conor Gillaspie pulled, that's right, pulled a double into the RF corner.  You need some speed to score from first on a double to RF in this ballpark.

Melky Cabrera- 1 for 5.  BA= .313.  This also does not look like much of a line but Melky's hit advanced Gillaspie to 3B and set up a second score on a FC by Pagan.  Melky also made a nice runing catch on shallow flyball to LF and doubled up Corey Hart, who was running on the pitch, with a one hop throw to Brandon Belt at 1B.  I'm not sure who has the stronger arm, Nate or Melky, but Melky's is more accurate.

Angel Pagan- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(4).  BA= .267.  Pagan stretched his hitting streak to 20 games.  This is the first time the Giants have had two 20 game hit streaks in one season and it's only May!  Pagan had a rough day on defense, whiffing on a drive to the CF wall that looked like he misjudged, and on a flyball to left-center that he took a bad route to that drove in the tying run in the 9'th.  I could be wrong, but think both Rowand and Torres would have had both of those balls.

Brandon Belt- 0 for 3, 2 IBB.  BA= .278.  Strange game for Belt as the BrewCrew clearly respected his power and disrespected the hitters coming up behind him.  Belt has apparently gained some ground with management too as Bochy has said Huff will be mostly playing LF when he comes back.

Hector Sanchez- 1 for 1.  BA= .271.  Sanchez delivered the game winning hit against an unconventional defense  with 5 infielders and 2 shallow OF's.  I think the hit, a poke down the LF line would have been a hit against a conventional defense though.  OK, let's talk about love of veterans here.  The Giants had both Eli Whiteside, who was a veteran of 3 seasons as the Giants backup catcher and Chris Stewart,  a guy who had done a good job last year and who Bochy worked with in San Diego that they could have chosen to be the backup catcher this season.  Instead, they went with a guy who started last year in A ball and got into just a handful of games at the MLB level at the end of last year.  Does THAT sound like a slavish, knee jerk devotion to playing veterans over kids?  What's better is the move is paying big time dividends.

Matt Cain- 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 2.38.  Another tremendous effort by Cain.  It was a  QS, but the peripheral stats were dominant.  Put THAT in you xFIP and smoke it!  I think we're witnessing Cainer taking it to a new level right before our eyes.  Oh yeah.  Matt Cain IS a horse!

The Win evened the Giants record once again, now at 14-14.  The Dodgers game against the Cubbies was delayed by rain and they ended up losing 4-3 in extra innings on getaway day.  Hehehe!  The Giants now trail the Dodgers by 4 games heading into their 3 game series this week in sole possession of 2'nd place.  The D'Backs lost to the Mets 3-1 to remain 4.5 games back now in 3'rd place in the NL West.  The Rockies lost to Atlanta 7-2 to stay 5.5 games behind in 4'th place while the Pathetic Padres lost to the Miami Marlins 6-3 to stay 9.5 games back and in last place.

Barry Zito takes the mound tomorrow evening facing lefty Ted Lilly.  Go Giants!  Beat LA!

BTW, Matt Kemp missed today's game in Chicago with a tight hamstring.  Most likely an excuse to get a rest on getaway day, but we'll see.

  2. Nothing like a walkoff for Mays birthday. I'm glad Hector stuck through his slump and has some nice swings lately. Pagan goes for the all out play, he'll make the highlight reels and he'll give that type. I agree, Andres makes that catch. Warrior spirit? Maybe.

The Bums. I have a bad memory of Zito serving up Kemp to dead center last year near the end. Barry needs to keep that ball down. Ted Lilly likes to give up HRs but this is a night game. Hope they come with some energy and purpose. We need some momentum. This is a important series.

    1. Kemp and Ethier are the only guys on that team that can beat you and Kemp a lot more than Ethier. If they throw anything close to the strike zone when Kemp is at the plate, I will be real upset. Listen up, Giants pitchers! Do NOT let Matt Kemp beat you!!

    2. Problem with Kemp is if you walk him, he can beat you with his legs on the basepaths as much has he can beat you with his bat. At least he has to work for it on the bases and there's that hammy twinge that kept him out of today's game.

  3. Hey how about a shoutout to Cole Hamels, yeah, Cole Hamels, I said it.

He admittedly plunked that punk Bryce Harper on purpose because, well, that's how you welcome some to the big leagues and let them know despite all the cameras and reporters, the pitcher can still make you hurt. Love the old school nastiness. Reminds me of Bob Gibson plunking every player who called timeout in the middle of his windup, then throwing a one-hopper into their ribs on the "pickoff" play.

Unfortunately, very un-old-school-like, ESPN seems to think he'll get a suspension for his admission. BOOOO.

    1. hamels was right about what he did...mostly because of harper's punk attitude since becoming a pro

you usually dont see that kind of treatment towards other talented rooks...cuz they understand their place

he just shouldnt have said anything

    2. Well, I can't say I agree with Hamels on this one. Harper has gotten an insane amount of hype and some of it has been encouraged by him and his agents, but I'm against doing anything that has the potential to do physical harm on purpose, unless it's retaliation for a specific similar action on the other side. Even then it's very dubious in my opinion. I Hamels wanted to show him who is boss, just strike him out. If he can't do it, then maybe it's because Harper is good and deserves the hype.

This does remind me of a funny story about Bumgarner when he was in the minors. He hit a batter. In the dugout after the inning was over, the coach asked him if it was on purpose. Bumgarner said it was. "Why" asked the coach. "Because he swing too hard" as the reply! LOL!!

    3. Sorry, that should be "swung" above.

I would also point out that Harper advanced to 3B and then stole home after being plunked, so he kinda threw it back in Hamels' face. I say good for him! If it's going to cost a run, Hamels might think twice about plunking the next rook.

    4. It looks like Hamels is going to be FA.. The Phils already have $100 million commited to 6 players! I bet teams get into a bidding war for him.. He's better then CJ Wilson.. Luckily the Giants locked up Cain..

They're saying that the Nats will shut down Strasberg at 160 innings.. We'll see what happens if the Nats are in contention in August.. Reminds me of the Padres and Matt Latos in 2010.. Same situation..

Beat the bums! They made some nice acquisitions Harang, Capuano, Hairston, but not sure if their bullpen might be a weakness to exploit..

    5. First real statement series of the year. Hope the Giants are up for beating Lilly, Kershaw, and Billingsly - a tall order. Got to win the first one against Lilly who has been hot.

Please send the good Zito to the mound today.

      Hope Kemp's hammy stays twingy.

      Beat LA, Go Giants!

    1. Yup, that's a tough one. This is a third offense? Wish Hembree had just a tad more experience, but gotta think about bringing up the heat. Giants pen is starting to fill up with soft tossers. Can't have that!!

    2. 2nd. 100 days. for a stimulant.

appeal is gonna take months...he is done for the season and probably career

giants are gonna have to make some tuff decisions soon...pen is gonna be a prob

  5. I would agree that Bochy's much talked about preference for vets is more nuanced than can be contained in a single mantra

It would have been interesting to speculate had Posey opened the season on the DL, would one of vets start over Hector?

  6. I am wondering who they will call up to take over his role. I assume it is too early for Hembree. Knowing the Giants it will probably be Loux or Machi.

  7. BEAT LA! Big series. What is the Doyers big weakness? Their pen. Get in their pen tonight Gigantes! Also goes without saying, but don't give Matt Kemp a pitch to hit. Let Ethier try to beat us.

  8. in what may prove to be one of the more boneheaded moves of the year....the giants activated huff

they cant go shorthanded in the pen...someone is going down

craw? arias? belt? pill...nate traded? riot dfa?

your guess is as good as mine...guess news will come tomorrow

    1. Honestly? As much as I like Crawford, I'd send him down before Arias, Belt or Pill. Agree they can't go shorthanded in the pen. I know it's rushing him, but I think they have to try for lightning in a bottle with Hembree.

    2. Looking forward to your writeup on the Bad News Bears game tonight.

      I'd send down Conor G.

    3. Yeah, Conor G ain't gettin' it done. Time to try out Pill at 3B for a few games.
