The Giants were not really in this one from the 3'rd inning on. At times it looked like it was the last place in the world they wanted to be and with that stadium, who can blame them? Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco- 3 for 5. BA= .290. Blanco set the table, but nobody came to the dinner.
Ryan Theriot- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .203. It's tough to swallow when your 1 and 2 hitters go a combined 5 for 9 and you only get two runs produced out of it. Melky and Posey were the black holes in this one. Melky, in particular, has not looked like he is seeing the ball real well since his HR last night. Dude can look like the best hitter in the world 3 AB's or 3 or 4 games then look completely lost for a game or two. Strange.
Angel Pagan- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .306. Pagan just keeps going and going.
Madison Bumgarner- 6 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.14. There was some BABIPing going on here, but Bumgarner sometimes gets hittable if he doesn't have his trademark pinpoint control.
Steve Edlefsen- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.70. Edlefsen seems to be settling in with much better command than we've seen last year and early this year. You can see why the slider was once voted best in the organization by BA. With his GB tendencies, he can keep his pitch counts down. 16 pitches to get 4 outs in this one. That should allow him to go more than one inning per outing. He's pretty much free for a couple more years too!
Mark Buehrle(Marlins)- 7.1 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.26. This park is tailor made for Buehrle. Really tough to hit it out unless you pull it. He just rides the outside corner with soft stuff and lets his OF's chase it down in the cavernous middle half of the field.
Heath Bell(Marlins)- 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 8.47. Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for. It's kind of jarring to see Bell, who was truly loved by the fans in San Diego and had great ties to the community there, get absolutely booed off the field. Kruk and Kuip were saying that he's always been a big guy, but I think he might be a bit bigger now. I think his body is keeping him from leveraging the ball in a downward plane so it staying up in the zone or even taking off. Oh, and dude has very strange shaped feet! At any rate, Heath Bell is a very unpopular guy in Miami right now. He wasn't quite himself last year in San Diego either so I guess it's not a total surprise.
Dodgers are playing under the lights so we'll see if the Giants lose more ground to the NL West leaders.
Matt Cain takes on Ricky Nolasco tomorrow to try to bring home a split series and a winning road trip.

the coaching staff can blame the players all they want (and they do deserve blame) but young players need constant reminders on how to play smart....shoot, even pagan made a blunder on the base paths today

Pill said he was aware of going home with the play but felt by the time he got to the ball it was too late and he didn't have a play at the plate. It seemed to me that he would have, but Pill is an excellent fielder at first base and has a lot more experience in the game than I do. Bochy backed him up.

What's Bochy supposed to say? There have been a lot of errors and mental mistakes this season. If Bochy says everything is fine, he gets criticized for being too stupid to see the mistakes. If he says yeah, we have to do some things better, he's gets it for blaming the players. It's tough situation to be in and part of why managing a young team is a big challenge.
DeleteNobody is perfect, but I think Bochy is handling things about as well as he can. My one major criticism is he seems to be a little slow in getting a reliever warmed up when things start to go south for Timmy, but gotta admit it's a strange place to be in with Timmy.

ReplyDeleteInfield defense was just awful today. The busted DP by Pill/Burriss (go home, Pill!) was bad, but Arias isn't too rangy. The Stanton double could have been stopped, and same for a RBI single (Burriss didn't have enough range).
Hard to see Bell like this even if it's beneficial for the Giants.

DeleteAgain, Pill knew the play was to home. He made a judgement call that the play wasn't there. I couldn't see the whole play on TV so I really can't argue with that. It looked like there should have been a play at the plate, especially since it was a force, but again, the TV didn't show where the runner was when Pill got the ball, so I don't think we can argue with him. I did see him look home so I believe he was thinking it through rather than just forgetting to go home.
Infield range is pretty much impossible to tell in person, let alone on TV. Burriss problem on D is generally not with his range but with his arm. Arias is playing out of position at 3B out of necessity due to the Pablo injury. I think he's done fine with the position and has made some very difficult plays. I saw the plays you are referring to, but can't convince myself that Pablo would have gotten them.
Pill's comments after the game indicated that Infante got a good jump. Looking at the replay on Gameday, which has several camera angles, Infante does get a good jump but I think a good shot would get him. But even then, Manny's throw was just plain off line and no one was backing him up, which is why the extra run scored. Shouldn't someone be back there? Theriot and Pill were both in to the front sides fairly far away.
DeleteIt's a tough play to back up. The pitcher has to take the return throw. Pill obviously can't get back in time. Maybe Theriot but it's a tough angle. Catcher has to stay at home for the possible play at the plate. I really don't see that there is anything to criticize here.
DeleteHey Doc, Arias is definitely not a 3B. He leads off on with this right foot for backhands that are wide, so instead of landing on his right foot ready to throw, he ends up taking another step to land on his pushoff foot. Yes, he did miss a couple in the last 3 days that Pablo would have gotten. I am not sure we are truly aware how really good a defensive 3B Pablo. Pablo is like watching a "How to" film at 3b.
ReplyDeleteYears ago my youngest boy went to one of those Tom House training seminars in Riverside. They were also open for adults that were involved with coaching Little League. Yeah, they weren't free. My kid was trying to play 3b at North HS in Riverside when Adam Kennedy was just a freshman, but a big time player already. My kid wasn't much of a baseball player but he made All Ivy League a year when Chris Claiborne was a sophomore.

Well, I respect that, but I'm still not convinced Pablo would have gotten either of those screamers Giancarlo hit down the line. Pablo is, indeed, a good third baseman, but he doesn't get everything and he's been having some trouble getting down on low screamers since gaining back some of his weight.
DeleteC'mon Doc. I don't think there ever was a 3B that would have caught those screamers. I am referring to 2 backhands Arias handled but his throws were too late. The first backhand, Arias took 2 more steps with the ball to land on his right foot so he could throw. Yeah, Pablo is not the perfect but who gets everything? He may not be fast be he sure as heck is quick. As much as I watch the defensive side of baseball, I guess I haven't noticed the low screamer problems.
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't see any alternative to Arias until Pablo gets back, so there's not much point criticizing him. I certainly don't think he should take Pablo's job away! I would like to see a MI of Crawford at SS and Arias at 2B when Pablo gets back. I think Arias is more used to playing MI.

Believe me, I am not knocking to the use of Arias at 3b because like you said, they have no choice.
ReplyDeleteIt amazed me how Crawford lost his bat from SJ. Yeah, that HD game kind of really made me a fan of Crawford. I wish they wouldn't sit Brandon after he has a consecutive 4 games with hits. But it is baseball...
I took in a couple Carolina League in Winston-Salem in April. Pitching seemed pretty tough there. Those people pack those stadiums....
