Down on the Farm: 5/15/2012

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies topped the Omaha Stormchasers 6-4:

Justin Christian(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .382.
Nick Noonan(SS)- 2 for 4, 2 2B, Sac, SB(5).  BA= .314.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 4, HR(9).  BA= .331.
Eli Whiteside(C)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .242.

Some interesting stuff at Fresno this year.  Could Roger K be in the mix for a OF gig in SF next year?

AA  Harrisburg Senators defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-2:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 4, SB(10).  BA= .243.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .208.

High A  San Jose Giants edged the Modesto Nuts 4-3:

Chris Lofton(CF)- 0 for 4, BB, SB(7).  BA= .263.
Joe Panik(SS)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .246.
Adam Duvall(3B)- 3 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .224.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 1 for 2, 3B, 2 BB.  BA= .270.
Jose Valdez(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.25.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(8).  ERA= 2.45.

Ricky is a very patient hitter.  Hope the Giants let him develop that rather than trying to force him out of it.

Low A  Rome Braves downed the Augusta Greenjackets 5-3:

Ben Thomas(1B)- 4 for 4, 2 HR(2).  BA= .289.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 5.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.73.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 10.13.

Did Escobar get BABIP'd or was he just too hittable?  This was Mejia's second appearance in a row with 2+ IP and 0 ER.  Baby steps!

  1. The SJ bullpen continues to impress me. Seem to be some very good arms in that group. Rosin has really fit well into the closer role. He is showing great command of his FB and the slider is nasty. Nice to have a guy come in and pump gas and strike guys out. He should be moving up soon and will move quickly to the MLB.

  2. Adrianza is doing about as expected. 208/248/539 in 125 ABs with 4 extra base hits, 13 BB and 26 K. When the weather warms up for good I bet he gets going a bit more. Its tough in the Eastern though, all the Brandon Crawford haters gloming onto Adrianza as the next hope need to watch this Richmond performance closely.

Roger K seems like a carbon copy of Nate Schierholtz to me. Glad he's coming on, worried about Frankie Pegs knee bothering him, he's been a non factor.

    1. Don't mess with my adopted son! :^)

I wish he was hitting that well, the way you wrote, it looks like he has a 539 SLG, when that is only his OPS. You left out his "stellar" OBP of .291, which is nothing to write home either. Looking at his K-lrate, looks like he is struggling with this level right now.

Interesting note on Roger K, but Nate always had pretty good ability at avoiding strikeouts, at least relative to free swinging K. Roger will have a hard time keeping his BA high. Nate has not had any problems hitting for high BA, but his poor walk leads to low OBP, and his power has been intermittent so far, flashing hot and cold. It is those hots, when he's hitting over 1.000 OPS, that keeps him around on our roster.

As Ron Shandler's Baseball Forecaster book notes annually, once a player does something, he owns that skill, then it becomes a matter of repeating that skill.

    2. Yeah, I was on the MiLB site for game stories, and got lazy. Always should slash line BA/OBP/SLG and NOT OPS. Messed that one up good. He is at 208/291/248 for the record, and that is looking Burrissian. Come to think of it, they both have the same BA profile: not strong enough and prone to getting the bat knocked out of their hands. Ehire has the bonus of being able to play MLB SS, but the bat is highly questionable. Sorry to insult your son though, I am rooting for him just as much as any other Giant.

With the Play the Kids in full swing, one pet peeve of mine across the entire Gints Blogosphere: the constant and harsh criticism of our guys. Parents and family read Giants blogs, there is interaction here and other places. I think posters should be hard, because getting to the majors is incredibly hard, the odds are long and against all but the top picks. But they should also be fair. And more supportive. I'm not perfect by any means, but I try to always support the players coming through the system.

  3. Right now any Giants position prospect should be making max effort watching the big club - every position but catcher is wide open for the taking...

    1. I think Sandoval's position is pretty safe.

    2. Not long-term, given his weight issues.

    3. I disagree, anon, as I think Pablo, while struggling with it, will find the happy medium where he's fat but still productive.

In any case, Shark was talking about right now, not long-term

    4. Yes, talking about right now. The Panda is good (when healthy).

  4. DrB, when has the Giants tried to convince a hitter not be patient? They allowed Belt to be that patient hitter while he was successful doing that, but once he had problems in the majors, they tried to modify his behavior.

And, I don't think they are telling him not to be patient, but there is patience and there is letting good pitches to hit go by. The hitter has to find that happy medium where he's taking advantage of every pitch that he can, because, as Bonds used to note, he didn't get many pitches to hit, can't let them go by you.

Patience is a good trait only if the hitter is avoiding pitches out of the strike zone. If the hitter is being patience more out of fear and letting hittable strikes go by, he needs to be more aggressive in his hitting.

    1. I'm struggling with this notion, as there is a lot of "All the Giants do is HACK HACK HACK" going on, especially at the McCronic. I think that's a simple cop out explanation, and there are several reasons, none of which revolve around a "hacking" strategy preached by the Gints organization. There are definitely some offensive woes though.

    2. OGC,

The Giants have been quite open about wanting Belt to be aggressive and swing earlier in the count. Their new roving hitting instructor, Damn! I'm drawing a blank on his name right now, is going around preaching aggressiveness and hitting early in the count.

  5. I think the roving hitting instructor is Steve Decker. I read he was helping Richmond last week.

    1. Yeah, Steve Decker. Thought of it about 5 min after posting. Guess I'm gettin' old here.
