Down on the Farm: 5/12/2012

AAA  Omaha Storm Chasers blew away the Fresno Grizzlies 10-1:

Justin Christian(CF)- 3 for 4.  BA= .374.

If I'm a GM out there looking for a very cheap CF option, I'm on the phone to Sabes looking for a trade for JC.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Bowie Baysox 2-0:

Johnny Monell(1B)- 2 for 3, 2 HR(3).  BA= .219.
Mike Kickham(LHP)- 6.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.81.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(3).  ERA= 1.83.

The 0 BB is the most important component of Kickham's stat line. He's made a successful jump from Low A to AA, but has walked 20 batters in 32 IP.  Free Johnny Monell!

High A  San Jose Giants pushed across a run in the bottom of the 8'th inning to edge the Visalia Rawhide 1-0:

Shawn Sanford(RHP)- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 11/3.  ERA= 4.40.
Edward Concepcion(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.28.
Seth Rosin(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(7).  ERA= 2.63.

Concepcion has 5 straight scoreless appearances covering 6 IP, with just 2 BB and 8 K's.

Low A  Greenville Drive topped the Augusta Greenjackets 2-1:

Kyle Crick(RHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.02.
Adalberto Mejia(LHP)- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 11.57.
Henry Owens(LHP, Greenville)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.91.

Crick has 32 K's in 26.2 IP, but has 18 BB's.  This was his first game without crooked numbers in the BB column. Henry Owens is a big LHP from SoCal who I thought the Giants might be interested in last year as a first round draft pick.  He ended up going to the BoSox in the supplemental round.  He's put up similar numbers in the SAL as Crick with a higher K rate and a slightly higher walk rate.  Owens has been an extreme FB pitcher while Crick has kept the ball on the ground.

  1. culberson up, affeldt activated

gilaspie back to fresno, blackley dfa

bit bummed for blackley in that he really was working as a starter and then asked to go to pen...different prep. he looked great the first outing, not as good the rest. wonder if he makes it through waivers...dont think he will

i thought monell was gonna be in fresno. has the makings of a solid backup

    1. Anxious to see what Culby can do. Seems a bit premature. Seems like another Scott Downs without the plate discipline.

  2. I can't imagine another team claiming Blackley, but you never know. Used to be any LHP who drew breath would get claimed instantly. Overall level of pitching talent in the majors is up.

  3. I was happy to read on Twitter that Baggs said to keep an eye on Kickham, he has the stuff to move up quick..

I have a feeling Kieshnick will be up sometime this season.. He's having a nice year .321 BA 8 hrs 23 rbis.. He has good power that the Giants sure could use.

    1. Roger K is a good lesson on why it's we should never completely write off a prospect, especially if part of the reason they are not doing well is due to injury.
