Down on the Farm: 5/10/2012

AAA  Iowa Cubs pounded the Fresno Grizzlies 10-1:

Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K's, GO/A)= 2/0.  ERA= 2.08.

Not much else to comment on in this one.  It looks like Hembree may be working on a 2 seamer or sinker as his GB's are up and his K's are down.  Not sure that's the right approach for a guy with his fastball who is on the closer track.

AA  Bowie Baysox defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrel 7-3 in extra innings:

Ryan Cavan(2B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .259.
Daniel Mayora(3B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .310.
Jason Stevenson(LHP)- 6.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.69.
Daryl Maday(RHP)- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.82.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.93.

When Bochy finally allowed a run, the floodgates opened.

High A  Visalia Rawhide scored 3 times in the top of the 9'th inning to top the San Jose Giants 4-1:

Chris Lofton(CF)- 2 for 4, 2 SB(5).  BA= .280.
Joe Panik(SS)- 2 for 4, SB(2).  BA= .246.
Devin Harris(RF)- 1 for 3, 3B, BB.  BA= .208.
Justin Schumer(RHP)- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.17.
Stephen Harrold(RHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.75.
Andrew Chafin(LHP, Rawhide)- 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.79.

Lofton stays hot.  Panik seems to be heating up.  Harrold played in the AFL last fall.  His season so far has been disappointing.  The D'Backs are loaded with pitching in their system.  Chafin is a hard throwing LHP from Kent State who I really liked in last year's draft.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets beat the Greenville Drive 9-2:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .287.
Shawn Payne(LF)- 3 for 5, HR(2), SB(11).  BA= .338.
Ben Thomas(1B)- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, SB(2).  BA= .269.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 5.40.
Derek Law(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.87.

Payne seems to be a 5 tool player.  He's old for this league.  Would love to see him in San Jose before the season is over.  Blackburn's ERA doesn't look so hot, but most of that is because he got shelled his last start.  He has 31 K's against 8 BB's in 25 IP with a GO/AO= 2.62.

Shane Loux has been called up from Fresno to join the Giants in Arizona, but has not been added to the roster yet. Ryan Vogelsong reportedly went to AZ ahead of the rest of the Giants and received an injection in his back.  He is not expected to miss a start, but yikes!

  1. Drb, what do they mean when they say he got an injection? Cortisone?

I think Bochy had the Announcer's Jinx left over from last week's broadcast. They put up a graphic saying he hadn't allowed a run in 18IP.

Panik seems like the guy who has to make adjustments. At the start of the AFL (for the little it's worth) he couldn't hit at all, and by the end of it was hitting great.

    1. I would assume Vogelsong got a cortisone shot of some kind.
