Game Wrap 4/8/2012: D'Backs 7 Giants 6

The Giants built a 6-0 lead and looked like they were going for a walk in the park with Matt Cain, ahem, in command and cruising. Then a lot of very strange things happened and the game turned into a house of horrors. Key Lines:

Buster Posey- 2 for 4, HR(1), BB, 2 E. BA= .333. Buster looked like his old self at the plate. He had a tough day behind the dish though. One of the errors was more Pablo's fault than his, but he also made some questionable decisions. Even though he struck out to end the game with runners on base, I liked that he took his hacks up there. Jack Clark would have been proud!

Brandon Crawford- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .091. Crawford had some good AB's. Even though the BA looks horrendous, I think he's going to be OK. He did have a tough day in the field but so did just about everybody. Kruk and Kuip were having a fit about the condition of the infield.

Matt Cain- 6 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 4 K's, 2 HR. ERA= 7.50. Cainer kind of lost his command out there and this park will make you pay for that.

Javy Lopez- 0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 0.00. Lopez came in and did exactly what he was supposed to do. Get a DP grounder, except Craword booted it.

Sergio Romo- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K'. ERA= 0.00. Romo looked like his old self. Too bad it was in a losing cause.

Wade Miley(D'Backs)- 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00. Kirk Gibson said the D'Backs study the Giants and make adjustments. They now have not 1, not 2, but 3 LHP's in their bullpen! Gee, I wonder why?

The Giants now have to go to Coors Field to face the Rockies with Barry Zito pitching the Rockies' home opener. Hide the women and children. This could get realy ugly!

Arizona, at 3-0, is in first place in the NL West over the Dodgers who lost to San Diego 8-4. Colorado was edged by the 'Stros 3-2 to fall 2 games back at 1-2. San Diego is 2.5 games back and the Giants are in last place 3 games off the D'Backs pace.

  1. Are you saying that play at the plate in the 7th inning where Posey was charged with the error Pablo's fault? I missed it.. Tough loss, expected a win with Cain pitching and a 6-0 lead.. I'm concerned about Belt already, have a feeling the org brought him up too quickly.. Hope I'm wrong.. The Giants may have to tweak their roster to improve against LHP.

    1. Posey had to stretch for the throw. His heel was probably on the plate, but came up when he had to stretch to his tippy toes to catch Pablo's thrown. I think a better throw would have made the play. Kruk and Kuip seemed to think so to. Room for discussion though.

  2. I'm on vacation, missed the weekend games. If you told me the giants scored 4,4 and 6 I'd predict a sweep for the good guys. If you told me sandoval, posey and crawford are booting balls and what not I'd call you crazy. If you told me all 3 aces gave up 2 long balls I'd say... That's life in the AZ desert. Bad beat, long season.

Brett Pill is coming correct. A walk in a pinch hit roll? Better than a home run in some respects. Melky looks great. Bochy has late inning flexibility. Hope the defense tightens up, I'm sure the pitching will. Better to have games like this early on.

  3. told you doc....if i get to see the kids play, im happy

tomahawk boy had a terrible st...not a coincidence....took a season to write book on him...but its there, and he will be in the pcl....then cal league...by june (saw him in cal league...never thought he would make it to the show)

didnt like how pablo was moving to his right, but if the surface was hard, that could account for it

too many ninnies screaming for craw and posey's heads...posey said he couldnt feel the plate

belt still has his holes...he has gotta adjust

and uh...if we have speed....why has it not been used once?

romo wins for the most absurd beard...cant believe the missus hasnt shaved him in his sleep

anyway....hoping zito can turn it around...hahahahahahahahaha

giants in good company...yanks and bosox both 0-3...saw valentine at end of game...he should not be a manager anymore. managers are not supposed to allow anyone to see them shell shocked

  4. The giants were like 52-9 when they got 4+ runs. Now they are 0-3... Depressing

  5. Overall I am not worried about the bad start. There were some good things to take away from each game and some mistakes that need to be corrected but Arizona is a good team and we just need to get better which is definitely possible.

One thing I will point out is that Affeldt is doing his best to prove my fears are ligit. How about keeping track of his quality outings and poor outings and taking a look at it again halfway through the season? So far he has made 2 appearances and although his first wasn't a bad outing, I wouldn't call it a good one either. This last one was definitely a bad one so he either has one bad outing and one average outing or one bad and one good depending on how you qualify good.

Huff is not doing himself any favors and Belt is showing that he needs more seasoning. Everyone else should get going here soon and I am not too worried about. The funny thing about slow starts like this are that it is only 3 games but it can snowball especially for players like Huff, Crawford, and Belt. These guys need to have some positive at bats to get them going in the right direction or it could get ugly.

Great to have baseball finally back and looking forward to this team getting on track! I am kind of glad the game today is on during the day so I don't find myself sitting at home tonight looking for an excuse to drink after watching Zito get lit up!
