Down on the Farm: 4/8/2012

AAA Fresno Grizzlies topped the Tucson Padres 4-1:

Conor Gillaspie(1B)- 1 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .294.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .563.
Nick Noonan(3B)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .200.

Travis Blackley(LHP)- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.00.

Roger K is red hot. 4 dominant innings from Blackley.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

High A San Jose Giants crushed the Modesto Nuts again 8-0:

Ricky Oropesa(DH)- 1 for 2, 2B, BB, SF. BA= .286.

What a pleasure to get to write Ricky Oropesa's name into the highlights! Schumer pitched 6 no-hit innings. I won't get to scout him on the Giants swing through High Desert.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets downed the Savannah Sand Gnats 8-5:

Carlos Willoughby(2B)- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(1). BA= .385.
Jose Cuevas(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .375.
Eric Sim(C)- 1 for 1, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .222.
Shawn Payne(LF)- 2 for 2, 2B, 3B, BB, SB(2). BA= .417.

A sparkling game and solid start for Shawn Payne. Crick had a successful, but wild Low A debut. Bandilla made his pro debut.

  1. i think throwing in sk did travis a world of good. he keeps this up, someone is gonna come a callin (maybe bosox)

is anyone surprised that the big club has again fashioned the baby g's into the yanks of the cal league?

like the look of the the new milb site....dont like the fact that they now loaded it up with java script ads that slow down my browser....would feel better if that money was going to the players

    1. Cal League is always favorable to hitters. I'm not saying that the Giants aren't producing good position prospects, but prospects in the Giants system are always going to look like mashers in SJ and the CL. Vice versa, if the SJ Giants are fashioned into the Yanks of the CL, then they are being fashioned into the Padres of the EL. Not trying to be a downer, but this is just from experience of prospects like Kieschnick, Neal, Culberson, etc.

Still, you got to give credit to how things are being managed in SJ. They routinely produce competitive teams year in and year out for the past six or so years. I think the hitting environment helps of course, but at the same time, their pitching has been solid the past four or so years as well. Either way, SJ has routinely been the best minor league team in the Giants system as of late, and that should be noted.

    3. IMO, what has set SJ apart from other Cal League teams over the last several years is their pitching. All teams in the Cal League can hit. They can't all pitch.

    4. I think Roger K's problems the last 2 years have had more to do with injuries than anything else. If he's healthy now, expect him to rake the PCL.

    6. Hey Bacci,

Yeah, I'm getting the scores on MiLB site. The standings. Boxes. All that.

I'm on a Mac, though. With Firefox. Maybe they haven't caught up to me yet. But, matter of time, I guess.

  2. I think the reaching atmosphere allows of course, but as well, their throwing has been strong the last four or so decades as well. Either way, SJ has consistently been the best slight group group in the Leaders program as of overdue, and that should be mentioned.

  3. Fangraphs has a nice article titled John Barr: Scouting the Giants Draft.. An excellent read for Giants Minor League fans which gives good insight on what the scouting department looks for in potential players they might draft..

  4. Kinda surprised to see Q and de la Cruz shown the door. Sad to see Main go, though not too surprising.
