Down on the Farm: 4/30/2012

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Salt Lake City Bees 9-5:

Justin Christian(CF)- 3 for 5, SB(4).  BA= .402.
Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .341.
Francisco Peguero(RF)- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .233.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 1 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .281.

Peguero was lifted for a PH.  Hope that does not mean an injury.  He's seems to be warming up, 7 game hit streak hitting .370.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Bowie Baysox 4-2:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .227.
Tommy Joseph(DH)- 3 for 4, 2B, 2 HR(3).  BA= .257.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA=1.21.

Gary Brown has been showing up in the highlights more often lately.  Hitting .286 over his last 7 games.  Huge game for Tommy Joseph.  Heston has a 15/1 K/BB over his last 2 starts.  Our old friend Antoan Richardson is leading off for the Baysox and hitting .313.

High A  Cal League was idle.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets smothered the Hagerstown Suns 7-1:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 2 for 5.  BA= .272.
Shawn Payne(DH)- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, SB(9).  BA= .340.
Joe Staley(C)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .171.
Paul Davis(RHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.25.
Steven Neff(LHP)- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.11.

Davis has a 17/2 K/BB over 20 IP.  Neff seems to have really turned a corner.  After putting up an ERA of 29.25 in 4 IP last year in the AZL, and allowing 7 ER in 4.2 IP in his first 3 games this season, he has now pitched 7.2 scoreless frames in his last 4 appearances with 10 K's against just 2 BB's.

  1. Roger Kieshnick continues to rake in AAA (6 homeruns). Is his prospect stock rising? The Giants might have a need at the corner OF in 2013 if Melky goes FA..

Tommy Joseph is holding his own in AA (.257 BA), love his power potential.. He credited minor league hitting instructor Steve Decker, who is in town, with todays big game. I'm encouraged.. The Orioles top prospect SS Manny Machado also plays in the eastern league and is hitting only .241.. I've read he's suppose to be a stud..

    1. Machado is the youngest player in the EL, a full year younger than Tommy Joseph who is the 3'rd youngest himself. Jonathan Schoop, Machado's teammate on the Baysox is the second youngest. Looked through all the EL rosters. Only 4 or 5 players born in 1991 or later. Less than 10 born in 1990's.

Tommy Joseph probably won't develop much physically, but he doesn't have to as he already has the strength. He does still have plenty of time to polish up the skills and learn how to attack a pitcher. Gotta be very excited about his potential with him holding his own and more at AA at such a young age.

  2. I'm really pleased with Shawn Payne so far. I had him at #23 on my preseason list, but it looks like I should have had him a bit higher.

    What does Paul Davis throw?
