Down on the Farm: 4/23/2012

AAA  Tacoma Rainiers came from behind to top the Fresno Grizzlies 6-5:

Conor Gillaspie(1B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .329.
Roger Kieschnick(LF)- 1 for 4, HR(5), BB.  BA= .368.
Joaquin Arias(SS)- 2 for 4.  BA= .373.

These are the same names we've become accustomed to seeing in the Fresno highlights.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels were idle.

High A  High Desert Mavericks stomped the San Jose Giants 7-1:

Alex Burg- 3 for 4.  BA= .257.
Josh Osich- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Giants are being very cautious with Osich as he's only pitched in 1 inning stints in non-closing situations.

Low A  The SAL had the day off.

Shankbone posted a nice rundown of Giants draft possibilities over on mccoveychronicles.com.  It's in the Fanpost section.  Check it out!

  1. How long do they expect it will take for Osich to be able to go all out?

  2. Good Lord. About time Justin Christian only got on base 2 times in a night. I was just getting plain sick of reading his name on these posts. Don't know much about him other than he may be bound to be the AAAA/5th outfielder type.

Question from a fairly new poster - Nick Noonan was once a fairly highly regarded prospect. I know he slumped in AA last year, which a lot of players (Culberson too) do. Is he still a legitimate prospect? I see he is playing some 3B, so possibly a ceiling as a decent utility guy? How about Charlie Culberson? His bat was once seen as profiling nicely at 2B. From what you read and understand yourself, is he still being looked at as a potential two-bagger of the future? Pleasantly surprised to see Kieschnick become relevant again.

Keep up the good work, stumbled upon the blog about a month ago and have been coming back for more every few days since.

    1. Good question about Noonan. I really don't know. I did not even give him an Honorable Mention in my pre-season Giants top 50 prospects, but he's apparently still alive and kicking. I do think Culberson is a legitimate 2B prospect.

    2. Noonan is hitting above .300, granted in AAA where video game stats become a bit deceiving. In some respects, I'd think as a guy who hasn't even turned 23 yet, he is probably ahead of some of the college guys just because of his experience in pro baseball. He is listed as a SS, but has played third and second. He must be at least serviceable in the field or he'd be glued to second, right?

Love the prospect watching. Not just the guys who stay on the radar, but it is fun to see guys who disappear then come back after being dismissed. Hopefully Noonan is that type of guy!

  3. Thanks for the shoutout DrB. Draft is getting close! Don't know quite what to expect, just getting the educated guesses together.

I put a more scattered one on the 2nd round up today.

Nice to see Alex Burg get some hitting going. I'm bummed he didn't get the move to the Eastern. It seems like they are pretty selective about who they move. Its possible they view him as org filler? I liked the power he flashed last year.
