Down on the Farm: 4/22/2012

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies trounced the Tacoma Rainiers 10-3:

Conor Gillaspie(3B)- 2 for 4, HR(2), BB.  BA= .323.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 2 for 3, 3B.  BA= .300.
Todd Linden(1B)- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .297.
Eli Whiteside(C)- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .241.
Eric Hacker(RHP)- 6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.19.
Steve Edlefsen(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.69.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.00.

Conor Gillaspie is having a strong year and yes, the Giants will have to make a decision about him soon as he is out of options next spring.

AA Altoona Curve scored 5 runs in the 8'th inning to break a 3-3 tie and defeat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 8-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 0 for 2, 2 BB, 2 SB(3).  BA= .200.
Daniel Mayora(3B)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .386.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 2.45.

Brown's struggles may be beneficial long term as he has gone into a "get on base any way I can" mode.  His OBP is .324 against his .200 BA.  His birthdate says Mayora is 28 yo but his picture looks a lot older than that.

Bakersfield Blaze topped the San Jose Giants 8-6:

6 different Giants got 1 hit apiece.  Ricky Oropesa hit his first professional HR while Adam Duvall added his 3'rd of the season and Chris Lofton hit his first, all solo shots.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets vs Greenville Drive rained out.

  1. What kind of year would Linden have to have in Fresno to suit up again in San Francisco?

    1. I don't think it's so much what Linden does, but what other players do. Players on the 40 man roster are ahead of him in line. At this point, Todd Linden is strictly an organizational player unless something unexpected happens.

    2. Yeah, I was just kinda wondering tongue-in-cheek on Todd. He was so unceremoniously shown the door I was thinking people would have to die in front of him before he shows up here again. I was really surprised to see him back.

  2. Even in spring training Gillaspie just looked like a MLB hitter.Good approach, good contact and solid swing. He won't be a superstar but I hope the Giants find room for him. He could be solid off the bench in multiple roles.

  3. Hey Doc - Any word on what the Giants are doing with Ricky O's swing? Letting him go back to the natural uppercut or keeping with the USC coaches flat style? Good to see him get his first dinger, won't be his last for sure.

I'm not worried about Gary Brown. This is his first cold weather baseball in his life. It might be his first extended trip outside California. Nice to see him get the SBs yesterday. Concentrate on your core: his fielding has been perfect, which means he isn't taking his hitting issues out to the field.

If the Giants haven't given Conor Gillespie some chances at 2B by now it is most likely because they can't. Maybe his lateral movement is just too slow. While we can dream of him being a great utility guy, his bat just doesn't profile for a corner. He's the dreaded tweener.

  4. Daniel Murphy is having a pretty good career so far as a "tweener." I think if Conor puts up similar stats, the Giants should call him up about 3 weeks ago

    1. I like Daniel Murphy a lot. I think he has demonstrated the hit tool much better than Conor G. In fact, if Freddy is a no go this year, I'd love for the Giants to kick the tires on a trade for Murphy.
