Down on the Farm: 4/14/2012

AAA Tacoma Rainiers buried the Fresno Grizzlies 11-1:

Justin Christian(CF)- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB. BA- .529.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .341.
Joaquin Arias(SS)- 2 for 4. BA= .361.
Yusmeiro Petit(RHP)- 3.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 8.38.

5 multihit games out of 6 for Christian as well as 3 or more times on base. Culby stays hot. It looks like the Petit era may be over quite soon.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels outpitched the Altoona Curve 1-0:

Gary Brown(CF)- 0 for 4. BA= .189.
Johnny Monell(C)- 1 for 3, HR(1). BA= .269.
Daniel Mayora(3B)- 3 for 3. BA= .355.
Michael Kickham(LHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.38.

Brown is struggling as so many Giants hitting prospects have done in the EL. Look for Kickham to emerge from his sleep this year.

High A San Jose Giants extinguished the Bakerfield Blaze 6-4:

Joe Panik(SS)- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .324.
Luke Anders(DH)- 3 for 4, HR(2). BA= .233.
Jarrett Parker(LF)- 1 for 3, HR(4), BB. BA= .333.
Carter Jurica(2B)- 2 for 2, BB, HBP. BA= .391.
Justin Schumer(RHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.25.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Parker is showing his power potential in his second try at the Cal League. I would think a mid-season promotion would be in order if he keeps this up.

Low A Savannah Sand Gnats blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 6-0:

Kyle Crick(RHP)- 3.2 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 3 K's, HBP, 2 WP's. ERA= 3.68.
Bryce Bandilla(LHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.25.

Another wild start for Crick who pitched 3 shutout innings before the wheels came off in the 4'th.

  1. Should Belt go down and Arias get called up? I'm hoping Belt gets thru this but its not looking good when a player presses so much after 3 games the manager has to meet with him..

Brown can't buy a hit..His last ab was a line drive to 2nd base.. If Brown handles this adversity well, then it makes him a better player in the long run..

Encouraging outing for Kickham.. Don't know much about him.. If he's a hard throwing lefthander, sounds promising..

  2. now i understand why monell is still in richmond...they want him to handle the pitchers

not worried about brown...even with the improved conditions and weather in richmond the eastern league is a killer of bats

    sj looking good

crick has some work to do

i think they stick with the petit experiment a while longer...such a strange and sad story

  3. One more angle on the Belt situation. Bochy has a way of bringing people back who were thought to be buried. Look at Nate. Who would have thought he'd be looking like he had a stranglehold on the RF job now after the first 3 games of the season when he couldn't even sniff an AB? Huff goes hitless for 3 games and we could see Belt back in there.

    1. There is a qualitative difference that nobody notes. Huff early struggles were with BABiP, in fact, he was walking a lot while not striking out. Belt struck out half his time. So it would take Huff three hitless games where he strikes out even more, as he is a vet with proven skills, like 8-9 Ks in 10ABs to get benched. Or a couple of weeks hitting like last season.

    2. Sometimes a hitter, young or not-so-young, can be so bad for a short while, or maybe even for a longer stretch, and it just turns around suddenly. It could be a new mental approach or a slight mechanical adjustment and he takes off. It's hard to say from where we fans are.

Who really know what something like 'Hey, kid, I still believe in you' could have done? A guy who pounds the table and says, 'He can do it! He's the guy we should draft!'

We fans, we are in the fandom/fanhood business. This is the business we have chosen. We don't ask what is. We dream what could be.

A long time ago, we dreamed Gehrig would be good. But no one in management, who was suppposed to know, played him. It took someone's headache or, as likely, slump for him to get a chance to play.

More recently, we dreamed that Torres would be good. But he was not made a starter. No talent evaluator (GM, manager and not a lot of us fans either), using stats or otherwise, came along and said, 'Yup, he will do it. Let's get Rowand out now,' though us fans did scream 'We don't care who's the replacment, just get Rowand out of that!' It would take a ball to Rowand's face and the slump after that for Torres to get his chance.

So, we don't really know Pagan will be good or not. Not Sabean. Not Bochy. Not us fans. We just dream - Hey, Blanco surely can help the team more - especially when we are 'trying to win!'

    3. I don't buy that it's all a complete crapshoot. It's a combination of statistical analysis, scouting/talent eval and yes, luck and getting your chance, grabbing it and not letting go. Timing can be decisive.

  4. It's not all completle crapshoot. But no one really knows until the player in question plays. We fans dream. Those In management try to do their best.

  5. Actually, Fresno lost 11-2, not that it makes it any different. Kieschnick had an RBI single in the 9th. I was at this game and Petit was atrocious.

Additionally, in spite of all your ravings about Peguero last year and my contention that he still swings and at misses everything below his thighs, Peguero still in fact swings at and misses everything below his thighs.
