This was another disappointing day for the offense and I have to say I'm starting to get a little worried. Key Lines:
Angel Pagan- 0 for 4. BA= .205. At least he didn't strike out. Let's hope this slump gets it all out of his system before the games start to count!
Brett Pill- 1 for 1, HR(3). BA= .283. I'm guessing Pill has made the team as the Giants desperately need his RH bat.
Brandon Belt- 2 for 3, BB. BA= .348. Gotta think Belt has made the team too, even if it means Nate has to go.
Brandon Crawford- 1 for 3. BA= .333. Crawford keeps plugging away at the plate. Once again, any offense from him is a plus.
Emmanuel Burriss- 2 for 3. CS(3). BA= .436. I think Burriss should be the starting 2B, but he should not be getting thrown out this much.
Madison Bumgarner- 5.2 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.21. That WHIP is not going to help my fantasy team, but it was an effective, if not quite quality start.
Giants play split squad games today. Matt Cain goes against the Reds on the road and Travis Blackley takes on the Rockies in Scottsdale. Now THAT could be ugly! Cain would ordinarily pitch the home game, but it's against a division rival.

Jeff Samardzija's bid to become a starter may have gone up in flames with a horrendous start for the Cubs.
Joba Chamberlain's star-crossed career and life suffered another big blow when he almost amputated his foot while jumping on a trampoline with is son. A trampoline? Really? Guys! Do not, and I mean do not, ever jump on a trampoline! Anyway, he dislocated the ankle and broke the skin. He reportedly suffered a life threatening amount of blood loss and underwent emergency surgery. Yikes!!

We are soothsayers DrB - Giants are shopping the LSU duo and strong indication Manny Burriss is the opening day 2B. Not exactly psyched about this, but its predictable.
ReplyDeleteI hope this isn't just a <$$$ deal. Frankly trusting Burriss's Spring stats is like chasing a mirage. We know he has zero power. The Vaaarrroooooom + hustle factor is unproven. His CS% is bad, even for spring (see Blanco, Gregor for hustle). His fielding has not proven to be dependable yet. Frankly, I just don't trust Burriss to be a day-in-day-out performer yet.
ReplyDeleteKeeping Fonty and The Riot is not the worst thing the Giants could do. Both have proven MLB stretches in their recent past. Sanchez ain't here until June/July and even then arrives with lots of ????.
Add in the Giants risk with Crawford's unproven hitting (though I feel better about him than Burriss) and I think keeping Fonty, The Riot and Burriss is best. Please Giants don't jump to anoint a 2B starter. This is the place where Bochy's vet grit love may not be a bad idea.
I would keep Theriot for his RH bat off the bench but I don't see much use for Fonty, even though I like him for some reason.
DeleteI've been kidding about the Cajuns all spring. I have a soft spot for Fonty, but the fact is we have a cost controlled guy in Conor G who can do most the things the Hobbit can except fake SS. Theriot is a bit more useful, but his defensive metrics have really fallen apart for SS.
DeleteLost in the shuffle is the following: the Giants tried for Bloomquist, much mocked. I was a mocker, I wouldn't mind him right now. They also tried for Alex Gonzo (Sea Bass) and Clint Barmes, and were rebuffed because both got starting SS jobs. Theriot is a nice cheap hedge scrapper guy. Just because he's having a bad spring training...
I agree with the Shark, the Giants getting giddy about Burriss' spring training is bad mojo. Keeping everybody is the best bet - they are cheap. Having to go out and get somebody else later costs prospect arms. Swim along for a bit.
And then give ol Sandy Alderson a call about Murphy if things aren't working.
