Brett Krill first caught my eye as a college player at UCLA. I think John Klima showed a video and gave a somewhat favorable scouting report. At first glance, Krill looks kind of big and clumsy but he moves surprisingly well for a big guy. For some reason the comp I keep coming up with is Michael Cuddyer. He had a fine season for Salem-Keizer, but he's on the older side so will need to keep moving up. I would like to see what he can do for San Jose in 2012.
Ben Thomas, 1B. 6'1", 240 lbs. BD: 6/3/1989. B-L, T-L.
Rookie AZL: .346/.380/.569, 6 HR in 130 AB.
Short Season: .302/.340/.417 in 96 AB.
Ben Thomas is a classic Moneyball type player. Bad body good bat. He will go as far as his bat takes him.
Joe Staley, C. 6'1", 235 lbs. BD: 5/8/1989. B-S, T-R.
Short Season: .280/.383/.490, 8 HR, 4 SB in 157 AB.
Staley seems to have a pretty good hit tool with excellent plate discipline and some power. BA draft scouting report says he is a fair defender.
Mike Murray, C. 5'11", 205 lbs. BD: 4/24/1988. B-L, T-R.
Short Season: .326/.394/.459, 6 HR in 242 AB.
Another older catching prospect with a hit tool. Murray is going to try to diversify his defensive value and then let the bat carry him as far as it takes him.
Dan Burkhart, C. 5'11", 215 lbs. BD: 3/6/1989. B-L, T-R.
Rookie AZL: .217/.265/.261.
Short Season: .285/.329/.438, 4 HR in 144 AB.
Burkhart was yet another older catcher for Salem-Keizer last year. The Giants are ridiculously overloaded at the catcher position. Some of these guys may increase their value by learning to play more than one position. Some may get caught in a numbers game. It seems to me that the Giants could trade one of two of them to catching poor organizations for lower level prospects at another postion, but we don't see too much of that sort of thing in baseball.

Hopefully it's just a precautionary thing with Vogey. Don't like to read about that type of thing in a player who is already a fairly high risk for regression.

DeleteDo you ever think that one of the reason why the Giants draft so many catcher is so that they can help develop pitchers? I mean, a catcher is like a pitcher's best friend right?
ReplyDeleteThat might make some sense but it's a very recent phenomenon and a pitcher can only pitch to one catcher at a time. I would say it's either just coincidence that the Giants signed and drafted so many good hitting catchers in such a short period of time or else they saw how much of an advantage having a hitter like Buster Posey at the position was and decided it was a big competitive advantage. It's more likely the former since most of these catchers came into the organization before Buster really made an impact. I do think Buster's injury will make the Giants think twice before trading any of them.

ReplyDeleteHe recently mentioned a player that seems to fit the profile of some players recently drafted by the Giants, Ron Miller of Serra HS (in Gardena, not San Mateo, so no hometown ties). Miller is a right handed hitter with light tower power, similar to Dominguez and Oropesa. Maybe someone to keep an eye on for the 2012 draft (?).
Oh yeah, I love Ron Miller! I'm thinking he's the type of player Barr likes to draft in round 2 or 3. Kind of like Tommy Joseph. Not sure why, but the comp that keeps jumping into my head whenever I see a Ron Miller video is Kevin Mitchell. Hope he has a better personality than Ol' Kev, but man, Mitchell could hit!

ReplyDeleteI attended the USC-Jacksonville game today. Sat in the visitor seats across the aisle from Scott Boras. Adam Brett Walker had a pretty bad game. Got going finally with a single up the box and a SB right after, but K'd on a check swing/called strike as well as swinging, and had a couple drops on non-routine plays in the field. Did make a nice snag later, his SS was pretty wild. I came off very impressed with the CF Dan Gulbransen. Gulbransen had a triple in the first, and had a double later on that he got held up on, it wasn't as deep in the corner but he would have made it. He also had a great play in center, and covered ground on all the routine plays. Only one game for ABW, I'm sure he'll get going but I didn't really like what I saw. The USC starter was a freshman lefty who didn't have any secondary stuff but pitched a nice game, got robbed of a chance to win by a shaky pen. Gulbransen won't get top press, but he really looked good. Top notch athlete, good instincts and fast as hell.
I agree, Klima is full of himself. Fla-Giant threw that down as well. He just wrote a book, maybe he's just celebrating. He does have a nice style though, I like it.
Thanks for the scouting reports. Always great to have a eyewitness at college and minor league games. It's a lot cheaper to go to a college or minor league game and the quality of play is very good, plus you might get to see a future star.
