Matt Cain once again pitched a solid game and once again got little run support. This time, the bullpen did a remarkable job of holding the Pesky Ones at bay into extra innings. Mark DeRosa came up with another big hit off the bench and the Giants went home winners for the 3'rd game in a row. Key Lines:
Cody Ross- 2 for 6. BA= .238.
Carlos Beltran- 3 for 6, 2B BB. BA= .296. Hard to believe Beltran had no Runs and no RBI's with a line like this.
Pablo Sandoval- 3 for 6. BA= .304.
Eli Whiteside- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .212. No Runs or RBI's here either. Giants were 3 for 15 with RISP.
Matt Cain- 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 2.79. Very typical Matt Cain start and typical outcome. No Decision!
Bullpen- 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 11 K's. Cain walked the second batter of the 7'th inning. Lopez gave up a double then Mota came in and gave up another double. After that, it was lights out! Incredible performance!
With the Win, the Giants stayed 8.5 games behind the NL West leading D'Backs, but solidified their hold on second place as the Dodger lost to the Snakes 5-4 in 10 innings. The Braves won their game, so no chance to move up in the Wild Card race.
Tim Lincecum squares off against the despised Mat Latos this afternoon.

I know we want to feel like the Giants are playing for something, but I don't much care if we end up in 2nd or 3rd place in the West. Doesn't really matter if they're not in the post-season.
ReplyDeleteI hope the Giants want to keep DeRosa. Hate to see home go off and be all productive for peanuts for someone else after the Giants paid him well for all of his DL time.

Ordinarily don't care about 2'nd vs 3'rd place, but it's the Dodgers for crying out loud! Gotta finish ahead of the Dodgers!

ReplyDeleteI have a GM question for you. We have about 24 million or so likely to come off the book with Tejada, DeRosa, Ross, J Sanchez, Affeldt, etc. Obviously we might keep a couple of those. Next year Rowand and Huff will drop off so there is another 24 million. Would you consider a player like Albert Pujols on a 6-7 year deal? With the money he would bring in advertising, seats, jersey sales, etc. you probably would only be paying him about 20-22 million a year. Putting him in a lineup with Posey, Sandoval, and Franchez suddenly sounds pretty good. Since Cain is going to make 15 million next year and Lincecum slightly higher, even if we extend both of them we should be ok after Zito drops off the books. I am not saying this is a good idea at all but what do you think about Pujols?
I don't think it's a bad idea at all. With the offensive talent the Giants have in the pipeline, I think they need to be looking at concentrating their FA $$$ on one big bat. I'm a bit worried that Albert Pujols is starting on the downside of his career. He's had a bum shoulder for a couple of years now. It would probably be an acceptable return for the first 2-3 years but could really go south the final 3-4. On the other hand, if Daddy Neuks thinks he has the $$$$ to sign Pujols, I would not complain at all. The lineup you mention would be interesting indeed. It would also allow the Giants to be more patient with the likes of Crawford, Belt and Brown.
ReplyDeleteAnother guy I'm thinking might be worth a big long term deal is Jose Reyes. He's had his injury issues too, but seems to be healthier this year and is putting up another 5 WAR season. Love Brandon Crawford, but he's never going to be the offensive threat that Reyes is. Beyond that, Adrianza is no sure thing to ever hit and Panik has a fairly high chance of moving to 2B anyway. Think of the value of having two of the hardest positions to get adequate offense from manned with the likes of Buster Posey and Jose Reyes.
If we don't sign Beltran again I really think we need to buy a legitimate bat such as Pujols or Reyes. Rollins would be decent on a short contract 2-3 years if we wanted to sign 2 bats. I think signing Fielder is a mistake. By year 3 his knees will be done. Hopefully the Giants' front office got a taste of the championship and will be aggressive to get back. We won't get back unless we get 1-2 legitimate hitters. This year we found out our pitching will only get us so far. We need to score more runs. I know the Cardinals supposedly offered him 195 million over 9 years. Would he take 175 million for 6 years? The total is less but it would make him the highest yearly total ever besides A-Rod. Plus, I don't see the Cardinals getting better. Both of their good starters are coming back from injury, Berkman is having a good year but getting old, and Holliday is the only one else who is worth a damn. The Giants have great pitching, have tons of young talent in the pros and waiting in the minors.
ReplyDeleteWell, the ownership shakeup throws everything into uncertainty. We'll have to see what direction Baer takes but it would appear that payroll may be contracting a bit which would pretty much rule out signing a Pujols/Reyes type player.
