  2. Assuming Ross doesn't come back next year, if Burrell hangs it up the Giants OF could be a mite thin next season. Wouldn't it be smart to bring up Graham and Christian and give them a chance to show what they can do in the majors? They could perhaps be backup OF's next season (whether or not the Giants pursue Beltran).

  3. Lyle,

I would like to see Christian and/or Graham get a chance to be at least 4'th or 5'th OF's at the MLB level.

Ross might be back next year. I just hope it's not a long term deal. It just seems like he and the Giants aren't quite as enamored with each other as after the WS last year. It seemed like it was mostly Ross wanting the long term deal anyway. That's why I'm speculating Ross won't be back.

If the Giants have the $$$ to sign him and still take care of the pitchers, I'd like them to sign Beltran to no more than a 3 year deal then go young everywhere else.

  4. Drb, No doubt that the Giants will have new faces in the OF in 2012 with only Nate and perhaps Belt being the only guaranteed returnees so far. Agree about Beltran and Ross... There could be some good outfielders in FA next year, Crisp (CF), Cuddyer (RF), Berkman (RF), to name a few.. Whatever they decide to do, I hope they stay away from long term deals that could block their young OF prospects such as Gary Brown and Francisco Peguero who could be ready in the next year or two.

  6. Yup, and you might want to give some credit to Brian Sabean for hiring the people who have helped him draft and develop this fine farm system. The long term fundamentals of the Giants are as good as any team in baseball, and yes, ownership deserves some credit for that too.

  7. Totally agree with you DrB! Exclamation point on Sabean.

The Giants have been pretty consistent with how they sign up free agents over the years, particularly over the past 6-10 years: if there is a position player who will be up soon that they think is a keeper, they will not block the young player.

They have kept positions open for Sandoval at 3B, Frandsen at 2B and 3B, Posey at C, Schierholtz and Bowker in RF, Ishikawa and Niekro at 1B, made space for Lewis in LF and kept him there even though Roberts was still around (and DFAed Roberts as well), and I would include Ellison, as they gave him a big shot to earn the spot with us when he had that chance. And even though he is old, I would include Torres in CF this season, as they clearly pushed aside Rowand this season for Torres. Fans only think they block young players because they got enamored with players who were not really prospects or were fooled plus never account for pitchers when they think the Giants block young players.

Again, if the players are keepers and they are near, the Giants will make space for them to grab the job.

And, I would add that they have been very accommodating with starting pitchers and relievers, Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner, Sanchez, Wilson, Romo, they even made space for Merkin Valdez (I think they DFAed Kline to keep him).
