Down on the Farm: 9/10/2011 Playoff Edition

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Harrisburg Senators 4-2 in 11 innings:

Francisco Peguero(RF)- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.
Johnny Monell(C)- 2 for 3, 2 BB.
Jason Stevenson(LHP)- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.
Mitch Lively(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K.
Sharon Martis(RHP, Senators)- 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 9 K's.

Peguero takes another walk! Another impressive start for Stevenson. Remember when Martis pitched a no-hitter for the Netherlands in international competition? Remember when the Giants traded him to the Nationals for Mike Stanton? (I think it was Mike Stanton). Well, this was his age 24 season. He put up a pretty good line for AA Harrisburg: 8-6, 3.05, 133 IP, 39 BB, 146 K's. The Squirrels lead this series 2-0.

High A Stockton Ports edged the San Jose Giants 7-6:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.
Nick Noonan(3B)- 1 for 3, 2 BB.
Tommy Joseph(C)- 2 for 4, BB.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 1 for 3, HR, BB, SB.
Craig Westcott(RHP)- 6 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.

An uncharacteristically poor start for Wescott. The GIants now trail in the series 1-0.

Low A Savannah Sand Gnats topped the Augusta Greenjackets 3-1:

Taylor Rogers(RHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K.

With the loss, the Greenjackets lose the 3 game series 2-1 and their season is finished.

  1. really not sure why martis hasnt made the jump to the mlb yet. i think he had one off year, but outside of that, his numbers have been solid.

that the giants sent stevenson to richmond is a pretty clear sign that they will make him an offer for next season, but i wonder if he will put himself on the open market

crowd in richmond was insane...will say it again, giants need to sign a long term and maybe invest in the club

sj broke team attendance record last night...close to 5k fans were there

wonder if the giants will send any of the guys from augusta to sj or richmond

btw, in ref to your idea of a socal fall league...there is an az winter league that draws from indy leagues and lower level mlb farm clubs...so it seems to be a good idea...wonder why no one has attempted it yet

would be great since the demise of the hawaii league...they could bring some players in from japan

  2. I agree, Richmond seems to be working out well as the Giants AA affiliate.

  3. one other note

ripken has been pushing augusta to build a new stadium, as they draw about 100k less then the top teams...augusta balking because of economy

not sure what the ripken corp is gonna do...but it has been a very good setup for the giants an i think they should be concerned

  4. I would think the current political climate would be very tough on public funding of stadiums, especially in the Red States, unless Cal can make a large contribution to somebody's PAC.

  5. San Jose had a great comeback in game 1, but atrocious baserunning cost them the game. Jurica benched in game 2 likely because of it.

  6. Yeah, it was for Mike Stanton.

From what I recall, Martis has made the jump to the majors but it didn't take and he got sent back down.

My understanding about Richmond is that the owners want to be a Washington Nationals affiliate at some point. The Giants investing in the club could help to change their mind, though probably if the owners still wanted to do it, the Giants can't do anything about it as a minority owner. I recall Neukom saying at some point that he wanted the Giants to invest in all their affiliates, anybody recall that?

Why can Stevenson go to another team, shouldn't he be under team control for a number of years? I know he was from an independent league, but does that mean he gets a different contract? That does not make sense to me.
