Game Wrap 8/4/2011: Phillies 3 Giants 0

Not much to say about this game. Cliff Lee is a tough customer when he is on, and it doesn't take much for any pitcher to be on against this Giants offense. Bumgarner pitched well enough. He gave up one less hit than Lee, but two of them were back-to-back dingers by Hunter Pence and John Mayberry in the second inning. That was all Lee needed as he scattered, and I mean scattered, 7 hits in complete game shutout. Think Lee didn't have some extra motivation after what went down in last year's World Series? Key Lines:

Cody Ross- 0 for 4, 4 K's. BA= .246. Ross had seemed to be hitting better, but he was about as lost as I've ever seen hlm tonight. The last AB was particularly embarrassing as he looked at two pitches that were obviously strikes and then argued with the ump about it. Get the damn bat off your shoulder, Ross!

Madison Bumgarner- 8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 3.71. Take away the 2 dingers and Bumgarner was magical tonight. He's gotta figure out how to get past the first couple of innings.

D'Backs are idle so they gain 0.5 game and are now 0.5 games behind the NL West leading Giants.

Jonathan Sanchez comes off the DL to make his first start in about a month tomorrow night facing the red hot Vance Worley a surprise star for the Phillies this year.

  1. except for last night, the mass trades and roster moves have made this team worse

and now, derosa gets activated, cuz belt isnt a good ph

sabean is great at evaluating pitching, great at dumpster dives, great at off season, cheap aquistions

he stinks at the impact bat thing...and he and boch have pretty much succeeded in wiping out the team chemistry

and the idea that huff is gonna turn it around is absurd

and the idea that derosa, who cannot hit balls out of the if is a better option than belt, is also absurd

giants could be looking at second place by saturday

  2. Someone might want to ask Cody to hang on to the f'n when he does bother to swing. He's lost the handle on the bat minimum of twenty times this season. Probably put ten of 'em in the stands. What gives?

The way the Giants handled Belt this year, from the start, has been deplorable. They are really looking to mess the kid up. Any word on options for him? Any left?

I still don't have any problem with the pick ups this year. (Cost-wise Wheeler is tough...but gotta pay for Beltran.)

There is a chemistry problem, but there's is time to sort that out. It's not like the offense was humming away before. Had to mix something up.

I was screaming for more DeRosa at the beginning of the year (before the re-injury). Guess I get my wish...

  3. Hang on to the BAT, for Cody, that is.

  4. Options are counted by the year. A team can send the player up and down as many times as they want within that year. Belt can come up and go back down every 2 weeks and it still only counts as one option. He has 2 more after this year.

Way too early to pass judgement on the trades, Bacci.

  5. Yeah, adding Beltran, Keppinger, and Cabrera worse: NOT!

Yeah, that Posey as impact bat was such a horrible idea: NOT!

Yeah, Bochy sure stinks at team chemistry: NOT!

I always have to laugh (sadly) whenever things get bad, the commenters true feelings about Sabean and Bochy just comes pouring out, and suddenly the people who have gotten it totally wrong the past few years, thinking that the team can't win without a great offense, underestimating the power of a great rotation, basically underestimating Bochy and Sabean, suddenly are the savants that know what ails the Giants.

I would bet that if we took their comments from last season and the comments from this season, and jumbled them all up, and blanking the names, it would be hard to figure out whether it was said last season or this season.
