By all appearances, Tim Lincecum and the Giants gave up on the season in the 7'th inning of tonight's game. After pitching his heart out for 6 innings with only a 1-0 deficit to show for it, Timmy fell apart in the 7'th allowing a solo dinger to Geovanny Soto and a 3 run jack to Blake DeWitt, two guys who ordinarily would not be able to touch Timmy. The look of exasperation on Timmy's face was unmistakable. The offense? What offense? The offense, or what's left of it, laid down and died in front of a mediocre pitcher who came into the game with an ERA of well over 5 and managed just 2 hits while allowing Randy Wells to complete a 9 inning shutout. No Key Lines tonight. There were no redeeming features of tonight's loss.
The D'Backs won their 7'th game in a row with a 5-1 win over the Rockies to stretch their lead over the Giants in the NL West to 5 games with just 27 to play.
Ryan Vogelsong takes the hill tomorrow evening against Matt Garza. If Garza is on, and what pitcher hasn't been against the Giants lately, he's a guy I could easily see no-hitting this team. It's gonna happen sooner or later at this rate.

If Cabrera does his job, it wouldn't have been that bad. I have never seen Timmy give in and tonight wasn't any different. The expression on Timmy's face for the post game interview was really sad.

every year, he shoves his foot right in his mouth...and this time he did it right before the break, with his "this team has been lucky" comment
while it may be the case...the team was also grinding it...an with the kids, this team had life and excitement...even if they werent scoring runs

ReplyDeleteDon't fool yourself. It's not Cabrera's fault he didn't catch those 4 HR balls. Don't forget the first two were solo shots. Timmy knew the game was over as soon as the second one left the building. Pretty obvious on his face and his body language. So yeah, OCab had a pretty bad game, but he's not what lost it. The collective offense lost it.

This team is already built for the future. What was the last long term contract Sabean signed with anybody? That's right, Rowand! How long ago was that? That's right, 4 years ago. These guys are all stopgaps for when the farm system talent arrives. My only concern is that the poor performance of the offense this year will put pressure on management to overspend on the FA market, especially on length of contracts, to get through the next year or two until Brown, Panik, et al arrive.
Agree there needs to be a major housecleaning, but I don't expect to see Tejada, OCab, Burrell or Ross back next year. Probably several others are as good as gone too.
I doubt it will happen, but there is no reason not to simply release the players listed above right now and bring up some kids for a look-see. Bring up Ford and give him some games in CF. Give Peguero some MLB AB's. Hector Sanchez. Let the rest of this season be an audition for next year, because this season is over and done.

You are being totally unfair to Beltran and Sabean on that trade. Beltran is a talented player. While he can play, I don't think his hand is right. Even with that, he had put together a string of 2-hit games before last night. It was a reasonable gamble and a reasonable trade that didn't work out.
Take away the injuries and I think this team would have waltzed to the NL West title.
hey doc, in that stretch of 2 hit game, how many came with runners on, or were for extra bases?

not blaming sabean, felt he needed a bat, and the only 2 choices were pence and beltran, and pence wouldve cot too much in prospects

Hey, it's no fun to read these comments !!! Ok we are down by 5 games and the dynamic is not ours but can we just wait till the 4th of september before calling this season over ? If after the 3 games against the Snakes, we are still out of it than there will be plenty of times to think about the trades that shouldn't have been done and those that will need to be done. This team needs to fight against the odds and the fans to support the team ......

Doc, after 60 years of watching baseball games play out, there is always one defining moment that will decide the game. It can syche a team up or down, but it is always there. Momentum is a powerful tool. Did you see the facial change of Timmy on that missed double play? It was one of those "Oh God, not again" moments. Almost like a change of attitude to go along with that facial change. Make the DP and he only loses 0-1....IMO
ReplyDeleteThe Beltran trade HAD to be made. Carlos has been hitting but no one else has. Sabean was trying to stimulate the offense but after reading about Ross crying about losing time, I figure Ross and his buddies destroyed what was left of the clubhouse. Huff's facial expressions and body language reminds me of the dessenter he used to be. Without the chemistry, the Giants won't make it. Chemistry could have overcome the shortage of talent. I truly believe that Burrell, Huff and Ross; all being good buddies, were the charisma chemistry last year. They started out having off years and the attitude went in the toilet and in rolled the bad new bears.
This pitching staff needs so little but the hitters couldn't provide that and I think that made a unspoken wall between the two.
The injuries had become an excuser's excuse until fuzz face and Nate went down and then it became a legitimate excuse. They were 4 games up and doing adequate with the Buster and Freddie injuries. The comeback lose to the Braves was the coup d'etat.

Last year I got blasted for being a homer and polly anna, but I still kept believing and hoping because the Giants were running on and off the field with the excitement in the dugout that captivated me. Other than the pitching, NOTHING on this team is like last year - NOTHING!
All I see now is a bunch of brooding spoiled brats being carried along by an excellent pitching staff and a manager refraining from turning into a clubhouse ogre. Bochy and the pitching staff are the ONLY reasons I keep watching the games. If it were up to me, I would throw Huff and Cody back to Augusta as well as say "adieu" to Tejada and Cabrera and then b**ch slap the rest.
Doc is right, this team is built for the future. Who the hell would want this bunch back next year. Not ont of those veterans, with the except of Carlos is worth keeing - NOT ONE! Hopefully it will not a bunch of over the hill lard butts but and an in house cleanup.
Sorry about the rants Doc, but I just feel like I am watching a bunch of quitters excluding the pitching.

AFL is pretty laid back stuff. They don't play games every day and not every player plays every day. I'm sure Crawford will find time to get hitched. Scottsdale isn't such a bad place for a honeymoon either. I'm having trouble feeling too sorry for him.
