Down on the Farm: 8/29/2011

AAA Reno Aces defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 5-2: Nothing to see here.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels soared over the New Britain Rock Cats 10-5:

Darren Ford(CF)- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .270.
Charlie Culberson(2B)- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .252.
Francisco Peguero(RF)-3 for 5, HR(5). BA= .323.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 1 for 3, 2 SF. BA= .247.
Johnny Monell(DH)- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .249.
Justin Fitzgerald(RHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.53.

Peguero is finishing off the season with a flourish. Looks like there should be plenty of opportunity for him and some of the other younger players/prospects to get some extended looks in September.

HIgh A San Jose Giants beat the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 7-4:

Gary Brown(CF)- 4 for 5, 2 2B, 3B. BA= .338.
Hector Sanchez(1B)- 2 for 4, 3B, SF. BA= .301.
Ryan Cavan(2B)- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .267.
Alex Burg(DH)- 2 for 5, 2 HR(13). BA= .294.
Addison Proszek(RHP)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.29.
Jake Dunning(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, Save(8). ERA= 4.30.

Another huge game for Brown who is finishing the season on fire. Alex Burg is putting on a strong finish too.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets blanked the Greenville Drive 1-0:

Shawn Sanford(RHP)- 8.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 14/2. ERA= 2.47.

Sanford took a perfecto into the 9'th inning. He's had a great second half of the season with a 2.19 ERA over his last 10 starts. His success is based on control(just 19 BB's in 163.2 IP) and ground balls(GO/AO= 1.66, 1.83 over last 10). His numbers are similar to Kevin Pucetas at the same stage except he has a higher GO/AO.

Short Season The NWL was idle.

Rookie AZL Giants downed the Angels 5-3:

Kelby Tomlinson(SS)- 2 for 2, BB, 3 SB(11). BA= .357.
Stephen Yarrow(1B-3B)- 2 for 5, HR(1). BA= .286.
Raymundo Montero(RHP)- 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 6.35.

  1. Alex Burg will be interesting to follow next year, as he seems to have come out of nowhere.

Richmond could be an interesting place for Giants fans next year.

  2. Yes, Burg will need to prove this year wasn't a fluke or the Cal League effect or whatever, but he did put up decent numbers last year too. He's suddenly become a very interesting prospect. A guy who can not only hit and play catcher but several other positions as well is a valuable commodity.
